Black Rabbit Hall

3.7 AVERAGE

I liked Black Rabbit Hall, but it took me awhile to really appreciate it and get into the story.

The story unfolded in a very well designed way, changing between the past and present in points of view (teen Amber in the late 1960s and adult Lorna in the present). There are enough teasers set in the present that keep you reading to find out what happened in the past.

However, the supporting cast was entirely static. There is no change or learning on their part. I wanted to see a better resolution than the one that we had. I wanted redemption for a few characters and didn't get to see that.

The entirely happy ending was just too much for the gothic, dark story that had been told.

Enjoyable thriller that did not feature the word "Girl" anywhere in the title.

Dual storylines, different eras, intertwining characters, and an amazing story are exactly what you will find within the pages of Black Rabbit Hall. There is a mystery to be solved and skeletons in the closet to be found. I was hooked.

When reading a book with dual storylines one can seem to get lost in the shuffling back and forth sometimes, in Black Rabbit Hall that definitely did not happen. The 60’s told by Amber Alton is told by a young girl whose family is being torn apart and her world changing so quickly. All she wants is to keep her family together. Lorna tells the story of current time and revisiting a place that she remembers visiting with her mom. This special place pulls at her, makes her visit again, and hopefully gets married there. I knew Amber and Lorna’s stories had to intertwine, I thought I could figure out how and I am happy to say that I was right.

If you love a book with secrets, mysteries, and a perfect story this is the book for you. I recommend checking out Eve Chase’s Black Rabbit Hall.

But only because I have a deep love for all the gothic drama you can throw at me - knowing this bias, my rating isn't very objective. Reminiscent of other favorite stories ("Rebecca", "Rules of Civility", anything by Carol Goodman) this was truly atmospheric, splitting the depths of time into so many fractions you aren't quite sure if we've entered a wormhole to the past, or if the past has finally caught up to the present. When Black Rabbit Hall finds its way under your skin, you will be sad to let it go.

I found this book while in line to pay for some other books at the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver. The reviews of this book compare the author's work to something written by [a:Kate Morton|615274|Kate Morton|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1520976897p2/615274.jpg] or [a:Sarah Waters|25334|Sarah Waters|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1409248454p2/25334.jpg], which is why I chose it. I like that comparison: this is a modern-day gothic-style mystery.

A woman searching for a wedding venue is uniquely attracted to Black Rabbit Hall, a dilapidated and crumbling once-beautiful estate. She tries to figure out why she is so fascinated by it, and whether she has a connection to it. Meanwhile, decades before, an otherwise happy family is devastated by an untimely death, and never really recovers. By the end of the book, these two storylines join together, but not in any way that I could have figured out. And the journey is full of beautiful writing and sympathetic characters.

Took about 100-150 pages to get into it, but once I did, I really enjoyed it.
