I've had this series on my radar for a while and finally got around to picking up the first book. I love the premise of three best friends winning the lottery together and seeing how that changed their lives in different ways!

In this first book we get to know Kit, a research scientist who only ever wanted a home to call her own. When Ben comes looking to recruit her to his company she has absolutely no interest but eventually they start hanging out though and feelings develop.

I enjoyed this dual POV slow burn romance but didn't love the miscommunication third act break up and would have liked a bit more spice/chemistry between the two MCs. Good on audio narrated by Will Damron and Carly Robins.

This was such a good book that I found it hard to believe it's a first novel for this author. All the characters are believable and relatable and no one is an asshole. I loved that the heroine is a scientist and the hero is all about that. Partly for his job as a corporate recruiter and partly for himself. Issues in his past and with communication are a problem for the couple but they work through it in realistic ways. I enjoyed Kit and her friends and her brother, Ben and his dad, and really the whole community. I've pre-ordered the second book in the series already. There had better be a book about Kit's brother too.

One of my favorite contemporaries of the year!

Beginner's luck by Kate Clayborn
Story starts out with three women and they're going over their day from hell at work while drinking and on the way out buy a lottery ticket.
They win and their lives change. Kate is a biologist and nobody understands her work even the man, Ben who's there offering corporate financing if she'll join his team. He has no clue as to what she even does but she likes the looks of him. She had wanted a home and bought a house with her winnings.
Zoey and Greer are her friends, like family. Story also follows Ben who's in the middle of getting his father discharged from the hospital and fixing up his house so he can stay in it as he ages and needs aids.
Enjoyed both characters as it's a learning experience: her with her house that needs a lot of repairs and him helping and living with his dad.
His dad works at the salvage yard and he has many things Kate can use at her new house.
Heated scenes enhance this story.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Her head bows, and she brings her hands up to cradle it. That’s all it takes for my stomach to cramp in distress, such a sudden, visceral reaction that I move right away, and before I can think about it, I’m kneeling down in front of her amidst scraps of wallpaper, feeling it crinkle and stick to my jeans. “Hey, hey,” I say quietly, and probably my voice has never sounded that way, so soft and desperate. But that’s how I feel—desperate. Desperate to stop her looking this way.

Ben is just the best.

I didn't like this one as much as other works by Kate.

It took me about 1/3 of the book to click in with the characters and even then, it wasn't as deep as I expected. Kit and Ben both have some serious issues stemming from their childhoods. We hear about them a lot but we don't get to see the work they put in to overcome them. It all seems rather...lucky.

Don't get me wrong, this was a good read. It just didn't live up to what I expected. It's a steamy romance with a FMC in STEM. It's about defining 'home', making a space for yourself. It tackles some great topics but for me, it was lacking that little something extra.

Sweet, sweet Ben. I loved both the hero AND the heroine in this story - which doesn’t happen very often! I was very invested in the characters in this story and felt heartbroken towards the end. All was well at the end (no surprise there…this is a typical romance), and I am excited to read about Kits friends stories next!
