A fun rom-com that you can knock out in an afternoon. This book is the epitome of a beach read and would be great for breaking out of a reading slump. It’s no secret that enemies to lovers is one of my favorite romance tropes but unfortunately, this particular story didn’t click with me - a lot of it was just Too Much. I didn’t particularly care for either of the leads and the supporting characters weren’t fleshed out enough for me to form an opinion on. This isn’t a bad book by any means - the author is certainly a talented writer and can create a fun story - I just found it to be rather..........unreMARKable (do you see what I did there??)

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher.
emotional funny lighthearted

I picked the book up for the unexpected title and I think it was an interesting spin on a romcom. The first half of the book flew by for me, the second quarter dragged, and the finally section felt a bit rushed. Generally I enjoyed the story but there were some storylines I wish had either been left out completely or fully resolved themselves (Richard Vaden's character was brought in, shook things up, and then was left unresolved in an annoying way).

What I Liked: This was a lot of fun and had some really cute moments. The writing was smooth and it was very engaging and readable.
I quite liked the central relationship. It was sweet at the start, but I really enjoyed the angrier tension when they met each other again
and I liked that he knew that she was a Heartbreaker by that point, and that it wasn’t a sore point in their relationship.
I also liked that the book did explore the ethicality of the Heartbreaking as a profession / activity.
When it was first introduced as a concept it was easy to see it as acceptable and even fun, but as the story went on it really made it clear how morally weak Margot’s arguments for it were, and I was glad that the main character, Brinkley, realised that it wasn’t ethical.
What I Didn’t: I did find the chemistry between the two leads, Brinkley and Mark, was a bit up and down – it wavered for me a little bit near the middle and I wasn’t as invested in them as a couple as I was Brinkley’s coming to terms with her relationship with Aiden, her mother, and
Spoilerleaving H4H.
. I also thought the ending was quite blunt and felt a little thrown together.
Overall: This was cute and a nice way to pass the time. There were a few things I wasn’t so keen on – the relationship was nice, but it wasn’t the most interesting to me personally, and I was far more interested in the exploration of the ethicality of the Heartbreak for Hire as a profession and Brinkley’s personal development. Both of which are fine, but as a romance, it didn’t work so well for me and felt a little bit flat towards the end once the initial tension between them had been resolved.
Would I Recommend It?: Yes, if you want a cute, light colleague romance with a little bit of enemies to lovers.
Would I Read Something By The Author Again?: Yes.
Content Notes:
SpoilerWarnings: Mentions of date rape drugs, drink spiking, sexism, intimate partner violence (emotional, gaslighting), mentions of drug addiction, sexual harassment.

Other: On page sex, infidelity / cheating (in past and side characters), difficult relationship with parents
SpoilerHeroine has a distant relationship with her mother, who vocally disapproves of her life choices.

I felt like everything happened a little TOO fast. I called the big twist as soon as the hint was revealed, and I found most of the supporting characters a little one-dimensional. I felt like everything was wrapped up a little too easily.

3.75 stars - cute idea, pretty sure this was written with the hope that it would eventually become a movie because the characters lacked depth and at times it felt like i was reading a script…but it was cute!

I initially put this book down because it was one of those not the right moment to read things and waited a few months to read it. I am glad I picked up Heartbreak for Hire again because it was a fun book filled with feminism sexy scenes. The romance of this book was definitely hot.

I was able to read this book within a weekend once I was able to get into it.

I liked how unique the job was and Brinkley was likeable. I could relate to her well.

Thank you Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read and review this book. This was a five star rating. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
