I really think Pax and this book, the sequel, should be read a single complete story for closure. This was the perfect conclusion and an incredible story about moving through grief.
I loved every chapter and felt the pacing was perfect. A beautiful read, not just for children but for anyone trying to understand grief or  come to terms with loving an animal.

The first time I read Pax, I was truly struck by the connection between humans and animals. I have never experienced that firsthand, although I have friends and family members who have. In this beautifully-written follow-up novel, readers find Peter and Pax a year after their final goodbye - each on their own journey to find their families and home.

Oh how I love Pax and Peter and their relationship. After the war, lots of land and water was damaged and some lakes had heavy metals in them. Peter is on his way to his childhood home, away from Vola, who has given him a home and comfort since his father died in the war and he decided he didn’t want to stay with his grandfather. So he joins the Water Warriors, who are reclaiming the water, while he journeys home. And along the way Pax and his baby girl are on a journey too (I forget why). It takes a while but they meet up and I won’t say much more about the rest. The ending ties up quickly; I had more patience in me to hear how Peter ended up where he ended up, but I also appreciate how when Peter finally had some realizations, he quickly acts on them. The boy/fox alternating chapters was perfection, this time with Pax explaining things to his daughter. A wonderful adventure with a bit of speculation thrown in. Highly recommended, both books.

I read this to a 4th grade class after reading Pax. I loved it. I think maybe it was over the head of some students, but many enjoyed it and I loved it.
