So far I have read this and one other book in this series and I love it. I love that the characters are brought back and that they branch out to a new family in each book! Can't wait to start reading the next book!

I didn't like this quite as much as I liked the previous book, but that's probably because one of the secondary plotlines has one of my least favourite tropes in it. But hey, that's a minor quibble from me because it's still a really good read - with plenty of other plot to distract me from the one that I didn't like. I know I'll go straight on to book three.

The book was okay. To slow and there wasn't much that kept bring you back. Just okay

Summary www.bn.com

On the longest night of the year, Jenny Majesky loses everything in a devastating house fire. But among the ashes she finds an unusual treasure hidden amid her grandfather's belongings, one that starts her on a search for the truth, and on a path toward a life that she never imagined. The Winter Lodge, a remote cabin owned by her half sister on the shores of Willow Lake, becomes a safe refuge for Jenny, where she and local police chief Rourke McKnight try to sort out the mysteries revealed by the fire.

But when a blizzard traps them together, Jenny, accustomed to the safe predictability of running the family bakery, suddenly doesn't feel so secure. For even as Rourke shelters her from the storm outside, she knows her heart is at risk. Now, following her dreams might mean walking away from her one chance at love.

My Thoughts:

While this story reminded me of why I loved Summer at Willow Lake, I wasn't overly excited while I read it. Jenny and Rourke didn't hold that magical character magic that I need in order to love a story. However, there was a redemption with young Daisy Bellamy, I am incredibly eager to find out more about this young woman and her journey.

There was a bit of predictability in this story as well, and it didn't lend itself to making the story better. In fact it the obviousness of some of the plot elements that garnered this book a less than stellar rating.

I have heard from numerous friends that this was their least favorite in the series, and hopefully that is a correct assumption and I will love the other books even more.

This book ran the gamut of emotions for me. I really enjoyed the story and all of those emotions it brought up. Plus, lots and lots of recipes to try out are sprinkled throughout the book!

As with the first book in this series, Susan Wiggs weaves more than one story into this book. The main focus of the story are Jenny and Rourke. Jenny has had a rough year. Not only did she find out about her birth father, she also was introduced to his whole family including a half-sister she never knew she had. Then her grandmother, the woman who raised her, died. Jenny feels stuck in a rut and almost trapped by her small town, although she loves her family bakery and the townspeople.

Rourke, on the other hand, loves living in their small town. He didn’t grow up there but spent many summers there at camp and moved there as an adult, eventually becoming the town’s police chief. Jenny and Rourke have an interesting past that is the cause for them avoiding each other for the most part. The way we learn their story and how it plays out is so touching and heart-breaking. For the most part we know where the story is going, but there are some twists and turns along the way.

Once again, I felt there were too many characters. However, after reading this book and the description of the next book, I can see that the many characters are necessary because they tend to be the focus of the other books in the series. Also, I'm noticing a trend in these two first two books, where people with history tend to fall in love. Maybe things will change in the rest of the series, because that storyline will get old.

I didn't like Daisy in this book. I'm not sure if it's because she's young, so I find it hard to relate to the teen angst now, or if she's just annoying. But I really enjoyed all of the other characters in the book, especially Rourke. I have to say I was surprised by some of the events in the book, which doesn't happen often. So I enjoyed this book more than the last. I look forward to the rest of the series.

First two books are good start to the series. I might have actually enjoyed this one a little more than the first.

This was a re-read for me. Whenever I bake bread, I think of this book and this time I decided to re-read it. I love the characters. Jenny is in such pain and has been for so long. Roarke is the same. Jenny has lost everyone she loved in some way. When her grandmother dies, she is very alone. Roarke had a terrible childhood and really gave up a lot of things. They have a shared trauma that makes them avoid each other. When Jenny needs a place to stay after a fire at her home, Roarke takes her in. Things get really complicated. Both are frozen in place based on their shared history. Each has to face the past and make a decision about what they deserve and want for their future. Very enjoyable.

This is a lovely story but I was so darn frustrated with Jenny and Rourke! I wanted to knock their heads together from the very beginning. But I loved the setting and the bakery and all of the recipes!
