Soooo I think my expectations for this were too high. I didn't love it for a few reasons some of them personal. Firstly the suspense for a reveal was built up for like two thirds of the book atleast and you just know it's not going to live up to that much suspense building and it didn't. The reveal was hyped up soooo much that when it happened you already basically figure it out yourself and it doesn't seem worth all that hype tbh. And the whole book is too sad for me personally, just crisis after loss after crisis like meh. So it wasn't a terrible book I just didn't click with it much. Won't be reading the next two but will be googling the plot 🤓

I couldn't decide whether to give this three or four stars. But I feel I would have to take it as a trilogy to make a better assessment.

Overall though, I did enjoy it. It was a good dramatic depiction of the characters struggles. There were times where I kind of felt "Oh, yet another obstacle". But actually on reflection, the character development and change in them was really heartening (and heartbreaking) to see unfold these two young people forced to mature very rapidly. That was done really well.

But that cliffhanger... I literally shouted "WHAT!?"

I am going to save the following two books (which I have been borrowing as ebooks from my local library and reading on my Kobo) for the winter months. I just have a feeling that reading the drama unfold in darker months will add to my enjoyment.

The telling from the uninformed and egotistical male POV was driving me nuts but I only read as much as I did bc I was on a plane and it was all I had. Read the rest of the series summary on Wikipedia and I AM SO GLAD I didn't continue reading. What a shitshow

I have a feeling this is one of those books I rate lower than the rest of the series until the rest of the series becomes suprisingly amazing.
I do have to say though that although I really liked the dystopian aspect and the character development, it was sort of disappointing. I mean there was so much more room for bigger events to happen and they didn't. Like the whole chapter Ness used to describe Todd's travel. Yes, I understand it's important to understand how a character got from one place to another but did I really need to know how many times Todd slipped on a hill or coughed. And I really was going to give this book 4 stars if it hadn't been for the confusion I had that came with Aaron.
SpoilerI mean why couldn't he just die, maybe that part flew over my head, I don't know.

4.5 stars- Hunger Games fans will love this one ! A dystopian tale of a young boy raised in a town of only males. His life is turned upside down when a horrible truth slowly reveals itself about the town and the worlds history. Nothing, nothing of his past was the truth. He is the last of the boys ready to become a man, he can't wait, for this status change. He is gifted with a dog, a dog he does not want, Manchee.(my favorite character) Manchee, a sweet lovable boy who loves his master/friend, even when he's not loved back. We know this because we can hear Manchee's thoughts, and every other living thing, man and animal. The noise never stops, their is never a private moment. Until he finds a quiet spot, quiet for the first time in his life. This starts a terrible and incredible journey into the truth.

I watched the movie when it first came out before reading this book. But, I had long forgotten most of what it contained, so I decided to read it before watching the movie again. I will spoil any parts of the book, but I will say that the last page before part VI was very sad. And the ending of the book! It left me wanting to read more. I will definitely have to read the second book. There are some pages that contain randomness of words, but it was easy to not mind that too much as it really helped to capture what was happening with the characters' thoughts(noise)

I absolutely loved this start to the Chaos Walking series. Though the writing style Patrick Ness uses takes a while to get used to, it is original and unique and draws you closer to the characters. Character development is awesome...I love Todd and that you get to read what's inside his head. I love Viola and the determination she has and brings out in Todd. I love how innocent and sincere Todd is in all of his thoughts and actions...I absolutely loved everything about this book and can't wait to read the rest!
