Kristin Hannah continues to write compelling, yet depressingly bleak stories.  Her portrayal of PTSD and the resulting SUD is trauma porn albeit consistent with what I have seen in the homeless, DV and SPMI populations I have worked with for the last 20+ years.  I can only pray she uses the proceeds of this book to support women's veteran's mental health and chemical dependency programs.
Very well written- 4.75 stars, Complex characters 4.75 stars, no likeable characters outside of Frankie and her two besties.  I felt like the book kept on going so she could make another bad thing happen to poor Frankie. Then, Hannah ended it so abruptly it feels like she needed to make a happy ending.  Maybe she couldn't think of a complex or satisfactory resolution for her character, much like the resolution of the Vietnam war.  I can't recommend it but 253, 147 people voted it the goodreads best historical fiction of 2024.

Loved the first part, second part not as much. So, the 3.5 is for the overall story but a definite 5 stars for the first part. The description of war scenes, dealing with trauma and the lives of soldiers and nurses were extremely realistic. Whilst the second part did a good job with describing the experience of someone with PTSD, I cannot say that I was a fan of the romantic side or the book's ending

Pros:  thoroughly researched, compassionate. The section in Vietnam is very evocative.  Cons (for me personally):  some of the social views feel much more "modern-cast-back-to-the-past" in a slightly clunky way, the last half-to-one-third feels more like melodrama when there was already a rich vein of drama to tap.

Stayed up late to read this, with both cats sleeping on my legs. Masterfully done.

This is a beautiful book. I love being able to learn about history in the form that makes you feel like you’re consuming fiction.
You can feel the care put in to crafting this story. Definitely something I’ll be recommending to many in the future.
The only reason it wasn’t quite a 5 is that I could see a lot of the “twists” coming. But otherwise, enjoyed this book immensely.

this isn’t my usual read, but I was left wanting more from the storyline and the characters. it was really fast paced and I wish we got more time to enjoy the good times and grieve the bad times with Frankie. I also had no idea the war went on for so long and was so disgusted reading about it.

Exceptional read. I love a book that makes me exclaim out loud from a twist I didn’t see. Despite the incredibly heavy topics, I definitely recommend this book.
I had no idea that the women combat nurses were treated so poorly when they returned. Even worse than the men. They received no help because “there were no women in ‘Nam and she couldn’t have seen combat.” But it is literally in their title. Combat Nurse. It’s true they didn’t see one combat, they saw the aftermath of each and every one. They stitched, sawed, held the body parts together of the men after each and every combat. They lost more patients than they could count every single day. Reading this part was infuriating, but it needed to be told.

“The women had a story to tell.”
