Loved The Appeal and really enjoyed this Christmas revisit with the Fairway Players. Witty, funny and a good mystery.
The mystery set during a Pantomime play was interesting, but far more so were the interactions of the characters and the fight for dominance, backstabbing, etc! Cleverly done.
This was a surprisingly fun quick read (I actually finished it in 24 hours). I didn’t think I would enjoy it so much, as epistolary writing isn’t usually my jam. But the author did a great job of changing up the type of communication often enough to make it interesting. I loved the characters (by which I mean I disliked the characters perfectly) and appreciated the perfect tone of British passive aggression.

3.5 ⭐️ Agatha Christie vibes with this mystery. Told in an interesting format: texts, emails, letters, and interview notes. A book full of interesting characters- a little Knives Out like.

This is a novella based on The Appeal. I didn’t know that before reading this book and I believe that the first one should be read to be familiarized with the characters. There were too many characters introduced at one time that I couldn’t keep track of them. As this is a solve the mystery type of book. it makes it less fun. However, I did enjoy the way the story was set up with letters, emails, texts, etc.
This was a very short book and a very festive one that was perfect for Christmas. I know if I read book 1, I would feel differently about this book. If you read book would, I would recommend checking this book out so you can follow on with this world.

I enjoyed this small little mystery! There was a good mix of very human theatre drama, funny little red herrings as characters dabble in crime, and is so very British. I liked the epistolary format too, and the framing device; it all felt quite creative as a format for this story.
I appreciated the twists and turns of the ending as well, that we don’t actually know who is at fault between the alcohol and the suffocation. Maybe I just haven’t read a mystery in a while but I enjoyed.
