Spearhead is one of the best WWII books I've ever read, and I'm an avid reader of WWII books. Adam Makos is one of the few authors like Alex Kershaw and Stephan Ambrose who, rather than explain what happened, actually transports the reader into the thick of the action. Spearhead is that rare book that is hard to put down, but nor do you want it to end.

My grandfather served in the 3rd Armored during World War 2 in a M5 Stuart and other than admiring its twin Cadillac engines and speaking about its weakness against German tanks, never talked about his time in the war at all. Spearhead provided a great sense of tanker life, especially how dangerous day to day life was in 1944 and 1945. The balance between three different soldiers including one German soldier also helped give depth and perspective. The book also chronicles the meeting of Clearance, Buck, and Gustav recently to provide some much needed closure for all three veterans.

This is a great book. Both sad and wonderful.

Review is for the audiobook. This was heartbreaking and profound. Gave me a greater appreciation for what our soldiers sacrificed to free the world from Hitler.

This book is beyond words. I read most of it aloud to my wife and daughter because of how moving it was. Each chapter drew us closer to Clarence, Buck, Gustav, and many other real world characters. This story will bring you laughter, feelings of redemption, hope, and tears. It also paints a quick picture of the rippling affects of war. The lasting wounds that painfully reopen are given to the reader throughout. I would recommend this book to all servicemen, especially those suffering from grief, remorse, or PTSD.

I thought "A higher call" also by Adam Makos was excellent so I wanted to listen to Spearhead. I don't know anything about tankers and there were a lot of battles in this book which aren't my favorite but it was quite a good book. Once again the brutality of war and the body count is heart breaking, what it does to someone to kill or experience so much death is also beyond comprehension. I like what Adam Makos does by finding untold stories. I like that he shares the struggles of the soldiers both during the war and after but I especially like that he illustrates and highlights human decency and kindness.
