I'm a longtime Minecraft player, and when I heard about the author of Day Z of all things writing a Minecraft novel of all things... yeah I had to check it out, especially after I heard that the premise was an isekai/stranger-in-a-strange-world I just HAD to check it out, and I wasn't disappointed at all. While I think reading the novel is fun (read the first few chapters out loud with friends), I don't think anything beats Jack Black's performance in the unabridged audiobook version. Seriously, it is a ride (potential spoilers) hearing Jack Black have an existential crisis over a block game. The narrator talking about the healing mechanics of the game (from the perspective of a real creature living in the world) was honestly bordering on psychological/body horror. Seriously, don't think about it too much.
I can't not give this 5 stars I had such a fun time with it. Just keep in mind this book is for children, so it's going to read like a kid's book. Things are pretty plainly spelled out for the reader, especially at the end.

Honestly have never played Minecraft or know much of anything about the game but I heard the audiobook was read by Jack Black and that's the only reason I listened to this book.
That being said, it wasn't terrible! I didn't hate it, but I definitely would have DNF'ed this if it were not for Jack Black.

The first official Minecraft story proved to be a fair representation of the popular video game. I read this with my kids, this time choosing to read via audio-book with Jack Black narrating. My kids really enjoyed this and being familiar with the visuals of Minecraft they were able to really imagine this story to its fullest. The audio-book does well with the sound effects as well. The book takes the approach of a first person perspective and helps us discover the Minecraft world through the main character's experiences. However if you are already familiar with Minecraft, the story can be someone predictable and deflates some of the mystery. That being said, I think it's about as good as a Minecraft book could be. Perhaps we will read [b: Minecraft: The Crash|39303946|Minecraft The Crash (Official Minecraft Novels, #2)|Tracey Baptiste|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1521279580s/39303946.jpg|60892778] sometime next year.
This book is full of great lessons for kids to learn taught using a Minecraft story. Great idea!
Lot of good life lessons for kids, and not just about Minecraft.
Read about half the book, and scrolled though the rest. Dreadful from start to finish.
My boys and I listened to the audiobook version, read by Jack Black, and it was better than I expected it to be! If you are familiar with Minecraft, this is basically a novel version of a "How-To-Play" manual for the game. Highly recommend the audiobook - Jack Black is a fantastic reader.
This was really well done. I enjoyed that the author playtested this book.
