The vibes were almost identical to Lin’s other book I read—a determined protagonist joined by a mythical creature on a quest fueled by love of family. I liked the various stories interspersed throughout the work; it was a quick and easy read.

I would have been into this more if it weren't so jumpy. It also gave me a lot of Alice in Wonderland vibes and I'm just not feelin' it.

A long book but with short chapters that make it less overwhelming to read, this is a pretty gripping kid's fantasy. I've never seen Mulan, so I don't know how it relates, and there's an aspect of the ending that's unsatisfying (prequels can be challenging). I'm not sure how I feel about a Newbery author setting up the backstory for a new villain appearing in the live action remake... but also, not sure this is a thing I should be judging. There are some references to wildly inappropriate adult relationships.

This was such an enjoyable book. It's part prequel, part reimagining of Disney's Mulan. There's elements of Chinese folktales and legends (I think, I'm not familiar with them to say for sure), and there are moments of foreshadowing of the Mulan movie that just tickle me because I love the animated version. I loved how seemingly different parts of the book all came together and make an interconnected story. This was a fun one for me.

soooo somehow when I put this on hold, I didn't realize that 1. it's Disney and 2. it's a prequel, rather than a Grace Lin telling of the Mulan story, but as "Disney prequel" is more or less the entirety of the book's goodreads description, and the libby summary is very clear that the plot is something else, that's entirely on me and I have no one to blame but myself.
