oh my god. this has to be the best read of the year. this book made my physically ill at several points in a way no other “unhinged woman” book has.

the book explores daisy’s desire to get pregnant and the lengths she will go to accomplish this. i loved the southern gothic elements, especially religion and class, that are heavily featured in the book.

Deliver Me by Elle Nash was my first read and my first five-star read of the year. I absolutely loved this book. It's dark, it's bleak, and it's strange. All that works together to make near perfection. Daisy aka Dee-Dee, works at a chicken meatpacking plant (check your triggers!), her boyfriend Daddy has a bug obsession, and all Dee-Dee wants is to be a mom. Her childhood friend returning and her own mom only complicate things.

Dee-Dee's desperation is apparent, and her journey to motherhood is like no other. Nash does not shy away from violence and descriptive animal abuse, but I can deal with that. As Dee-Dee gets closer to motherhood, her life spirals more and more.

The book definitely explores how it's easy for some to become moms and a bit of what it might feel like for those who it's not easy for. This book reminds me a bit of an Otessa Mosfegh book due to it being a bit bizarre. I will definitely be checking out more of Nash's books.

When I first finished this I kinda thought “oh that was a little anticlimactic” but then as I sat with it things kinda came together more and made sense. But I did still want MORE; the things that happen are shocking but there isn’t enough of it for me.

Deliver Me is substantially more complex than Nash's other works, incorporating flashbacks, significant research (I assume), and character development in ways that I haven't seen in her back catalogue. Keep it up! I also appreciate that Nash gives us yet another lower class protagonist - it's nice to have a break from upper-middle class girlboss internship or yoga mom stories, truly.

Spoiler:
I will say she did a good job building tension regarding the bee bites - I kept waiting for a certain something to happen and I'm grateful that it did not, whew

I knew going in that there would be some form of livestock animal cruelty due to the MCs job. But the two instances of domestic animal abuse made me sick to my stomach. I had to skips those parts altogether because it made me so uncomfortable. I just feel we could know how fucked up a character’s psyche is without resorting to things like that but if the author’s sole purpose was making a visceral emotional impact then I guess mission accomplished.

The writing is truly phenomenal. This was a really disturbing read and has a WILD ending. Docking a star due to personal preferences regarding triggers (animal).
