3.5 stars. It was a good sequel to the first and was definitely entertaining. I found these characters to be stupidly frustrating at times and I just wanted to shake them!! Also I felt like it focused A LOT on their personal relationships and the action plot took a backseat, so much so that it felt like it didn’t matter. And in a fantasy novel the stakes a should be high...

It's more of a 3.5/5
I don't know what to think with this series ... really. I enjoy the world and the plot but for me, it lack character development (and god knows I am not a fan oh those sometimes haha).
to me, the story goes a little in every direction it can get without breathing and letting its characters where they need to go (physically and emotionally).

The plot changes all the time, they travel to the "end of the world and back" ... Everything is going to fast and I can't catch my breath.

I really want to read the third book now because I cannot think about the plot in Once a King. The end of book 2 (don't worry I won't spoil) could just be the end of the series you know ... and we could get novellas here and there for support ... So ... I am really interested in this third installment !

First half dragged and then everything and nothing got resolved. However I enjoyed King Aroden and was hoping he turned out to be a spiriter too.

This book was an improvement on the first. The plot was more complex, and though I usually don't like the switching of perspectives from which a story is told when that is not how the first was written, I enjoyed reading Cohen's and Aodren's perspectives as well. The various events happening to the three characters lined up well. There was more intrigue and character depth. I did find it kind of strange that the main villain was supposed to be a continuation from the first book, and yet she just kind of randomly appears in this book with barely an introduction in the first.

I really, really dislike it when authors narrate Book 1 exclusively from a certain character's perspective, and then move into multiple viewpoints for Book 2. RAGE. I dislike the inconsistency, and it feels lazy.

That said...this isn't a bad book at all. I was pleased that while Channeler magic was still an important aspect of the story, Britta's lack of a teacher meant that she was mostly free to revert back to being the bad-ass hunter that she started out as in Book 1. I also enjoyed watching Britta grow. Her circumstances in this book are wildly different from what they were in Book 1, and not in a way that is comfortable for her. Watcher her deal with that was really fun.

As with Book 1, the romance is strong in this one. I should have expected it, but the love triangle was a bit more central to the story than I would have preferred. That said, while I really dislike plots that rely on characters failing to communicate, this version of it made sense because she explored WHY certain characters chose to keep certain secrets, even if it wasn't objectively a great choice. Still, the ending felt a tad too easy after all of that maddening buildup.

Listened to this on audio. I was so impressed with how the narrator handled all three viewpoints. I could always tell who was narrating based on little shifts in her voice.

Yes! Finally here's the sequel to Ever the Hunted. And I loved it! The writing style appeals to me, and I simply loved how the storyline advanced.

Better than the first! The characters had more depth and you could really feel their emotions. Recommendation: 8/10
