Plot or Character Driven: Character
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Hey, what a surprise that I enjoyed a family saga with flawed characters, right? I understand the mixed reviews on this, considering this is very much a character-driven novel and Julia is not the most likable character. But the way Lombardo portrays Julia and all of her complexities was just so honest and relatable (though it pains me a bit to cop to that!),  it just landed with me. And that's despite the fact that she claimed Julia and Mark saw Wilco at the Auditorium Theatre in the mid-90s which is an impossibility. 😉

This definitely didn’t pick up speed for me until about 1/2 way through. a must-read for anyone who has ever navigated the complexities of family relationships, marriage, and motherhood, and will resonate deeply with readers who appreciate character-driven. It’s just that. There were relatable moments. And, pondering.

I loved the writing - once I got used to the author's style, it was easy to immerse myself into the story. The main character - Julia - wasn't very likable, which makes me cringe because I could strongly relate with her (well, with how she thinks, how she perceives people and situations, not her behavior). A great look at motherhood, at childhood trauma, at relationships between moms and daugthers/sons.
