This book just makes me cringe
-I hated the protagonist
-what the heck was the romance
-the whole book felt like rubbing cornstarch between my fingers
This might be some people’s jam but it really wasn’t for me.
Technically this was a DNF but I only had 50 pages left so I marked it as Read

This was soooo mediocre to me. I found the writing style to be flat as well as the characters. The world was pretty unique though and I liked how the main character was missing an eye, also, the needle thing with the king. That was great. Overall I feel like nothing happened and it was just alright to me.
This book was pretty good! Although it did sound a lot like The Darkest Minds a lot. Adelina was an interesting character because she is not your typical hero, she has darkness in her which she periodically let take her over. That is where this book stands out from the rest, the fact that Adelina is an anti-hero more than anything. Overall I enjoyed the writing in this book and the world is very interesting, although the world building could have been more flushed out because we really follow Adelina only.
I think Adelina’s powers is pretty interesting and it’s kind of the first time I see something like this in a young adult book.
Recommendations
Read this book if you’re interested in getting a fresh view of the side of the anti-hero.

I really thought she would get said to have like caused the most stones to light up - you know the whole Mary Sue thing.
Wow she killed Dante by causing him to feel pain? I felt this was a bit far fetched because somehow her illusion of pain can kill him? I mean I guess it’s like she made him experience a level of pain above his pain threshold and so he kind of just died but yeah??
I sure hope Violetta will use her powers to weaken Teren so that Enzo can fight.
That moment when even Adelina couldn’t tell apart the illlusion of Teren that she placed onto Enzo and just killed Enzo when she could have done it to Teren.
It was sad seeing that the Daggers saw Adelina as one who betrayed them and told her to leave.
That’s all I have to say. Feel free to approach me and talk to me!

This mostly has my thoughts when I was reading the aforementioned book.I really thought she would get said to have like caused the most stones to light up - you know the whole Mary Sue thing.

Woah! That book was a roller-coaster ride! I have many mixed feelings about this book, so brace yourselves for my jumbled mess of thoughts! Overall though, I really loved it and can't wait to read The Rose Society.
I would like to start off by pointing out what a unique idea inspired this book! So much of the young adult genre follows the same patterns, tropes, clichés and plotlines, but this book was so completely different to anything else I've ever read! It was very impressive and unpredictable.
The plot overall was just awesome!
I also loved the different points-of-view. It was really great to be able to see the story from a few different perspectives, because it gave a view on the events other than just the way Adelina saw things.
It was particularly interesting (not a cool, fun sort of interesting, more like a WOAH, WHAT? sort of interesting) to get to understand Teren a little bit better, because otherwise he could have been a character I would have easily dismissed and never thought about. In later books, I hope that there is a little less from Adelina's point of view and I get to hear more from the others.
The reason I only gave it four stars was that I didn't feel particularly attached to the other characters. I thought Teren was interesting, so was Violetta, and Raffaele is my precious cinnamon roll. But otherwise, I was fairly indifferent to them all. I liked them all well enough, I was just never really emotionally attached to them.
But really, I'm just being controversial and difficult about the characters. They were really very well written and when I think about them looking back, I really am quite fond of them.
Overall, this book was awesome, epic, exhilarating, wonderful and unpredictable. I highly recommend it! Can't wait to read the next one!

I never guessed that Adelina was such a complex character! At the start she seemed like a really good protagonist and then you slowly start to realise that she can't control her powers and it's getting out of hand... Then bam! Before you realise it, she's started killing and it's way out of control! Also, there are plot twists everywhere! I never saw any of the entire story coming. Maybe I'm just oblivious, but wow! What a thrilling story!I also loved the different points-of-view. I did like this book, but aside from the main character none of the other characters stood out to me or really seemed to interesting. I know that its probably because more time was spent on creating the world and advancing the plot, not to mention the deep layers of the main character's thoughts and emotions. I hope the next book has more character development for side characters, but other than that it was a really fun and interesting book. The idea of a villain as a main character while not really knowing it was interesting and different. Marie Lu is really good at beautiful layered descriptions and I really love her writing style. Sometimes it makes the story slow, which is an issue for me since I have a small attention span, but I still really liked it.
I'm giving this book a 4 stars rating because I was a bit bored at the start of the book. However, the ENDING!! I couldn't put this book down for the past two days and all I can say is that the ending broke my heart.
This book is wonderfully dark, with Adelina's story twisted in real emotion. My only real issue with this story is that I hate the name "Young Elites" for this band of gifted teens. It does not feel like a nickname that would naturally spring from society. But that's a minor burr that can be overlooked in favor of the story, which is strong and the best part (for me), which came in the acknowledgements at the end. Read them, like you'd stay through the credits of a movie for an extra scene.
I struggled to like the protagonist. This one is not appropriate for a 5/6th grade audience so won't go on my shelves. I'm curious about what Lu did with book two. Unfortunately I'm not curious enough to spend precious time reading it. Meh...
