A five-star read (and perfect re-read)! Rachel Lynn Solomon crafts a charismatic set of characters that traverse from the territory of academic rivals, friends, and finding love in a day (well more like the 4 years of high school rivalry). The wittiness of the characters and set of clues for a thrilling scavenger hunt lead readers to love Seattle and how academic love is a dual passion that’s doesn’t stop at graduation.

I did feel that the ending was disproportionate and rushed in comparison to the journey the novel takes readers on with Rowan Roth and Neil (Perlman) McNair. I’m left with yearning for Neil’s graduation speech, “Artoo” finally having a Star Wars marathon with Neil, and the growth of their friendship. Thankfully my current reread only leaves a gap of three days until Solomon’s sequel, Past Present Future, is published. I look forward to reading what’s next in Rowan and Neil’s story.

~made me smile (0,6/0,6) YES FJFJFJF the good morning texts jfjffn loved it and their banter was the best and it always made me giggle fjjffnnc, and when she wondered if he had freckles in other places other than his face I started laughing jdjfnf
~got me hooked in (1/1) YEAAAAAA
~bored me (-0/-0,2) nopee
~writing (0,5/0,5) amazing and the best well-written rivals to lovers imo, the angst, the banter i loved it and the whole scavanger hunt thing was actually interesting
~made sense (0,6/0,6) yupp, tbh what wouldnt make sense?
~favorited (0,7/0,7) ABSO FUCKING LUTELY me rereadihg it kinda shows it so
~moved me (0,6/0,6) when neil told rowan about his dad and she hugged him while he cried :) and when she invited him to dinner with her parents it made me so happy
~surprised me (0,5/0,5) when neil yoldher he was also Jewish, when rowan saw that romance book she made her essay on (forgot the name) on Neil's shelf and he told her he actually liked it and when he told her he was a huge fan of her parent's books fjfjjf I was like no way, also when he stood up for romance books at diner with her parents as a way to show rowan he understood her. WHEN IT WAS REVEALED HE HAD HER NAME I WAS LIKE WTFF
~characters (0,5/0,5) Rowan 'Artoio' Roth, she was the best like djfjfj I loved her, the fact that she was obsessed with neil and claimed she hated him djfjfjfnf like bestie i think not, as a child of successful writer parents who are famous with their children series, she secretly wrote a romance novel, dreaming to become a writer even though both her parents and her bestfriends mock the romance novels, defining them as garbage, such a girlboss moment I loved it. Neil 'McNightmare' McNair, man is everything, man's a ginger, man cooks, man fixes stuff, man has freckles, man makes his own suits, man is the best tbh, He was just the perfect boy like I love him sm, I love the fact that ge apologized to Artoo for making fun of her for liking romance books; seeing him be protective of his lil sister and stand up for romance books at dinner with Rowan's parents was everything to me, his past and everything that happened with his shitbag of a father made me feel so sorry for him and the fact that he wanted to win Howl to use the money to change his last name made me like him even more. tbh this book is just perfection and the characters are the absolute best I fucking love Rowan and Neil smm

Ok if I knew these characters were Fleet Foxes stans I would've picked up this book sooner!

Love the classic Rachel Lynn Solomon representation for girls who want to do the thing but can't (it's writing. it's always writing). This book is so sweet: adorable romance, love letter to Seattle, effective and suspenseful plot framing, struggles of loving something deemed frivolous, bittersweet snapshot of the heightened feelings of high school graduation. It IS actually so special and emotional to leave behind your community :').
