I got an ARC of this book.

Classic pirate tale. Lots of sword fights, some chasing from the crown, a mutiny. You name it and this book has it. Even has a wonderful scene of a setting the crown’s ships on fire. What more could a pirate fan want.

That being said, the story was just a typical pirate story. The big difference just being gender. Oh no, a female pirate. The story would have relatively been the same if the MC had been male. There was nothing that made this stand out from other pirate stories. The few times her gender comes up actually annoyed me, because it was usually sexism (show me your boobs sort) or because her outfit choices.

The art was fantastic. My only issue was that there was just constant cleavage shots of the MC. I don’t expect skin tight clothing to be the most comfortable thing to pirate in. Outside of it is restrictive, it would also not offer as much protection from the elements. It just felt like a poor choice. One of the creators even mentioned in the afterword that one of the legends had her dressed solely in mens’ clothing. So I am not sure where the idea of a skin tight shirt that couldn’t even fully button came from.

I do look forward to seeing where this story goes. I want to give it a chance to wow me outside of the art. It was a good beginning to a fun story, but it really depends on how volume two goes.

A fun, feminist pirate story inspired by the stories and adventures of Anne Bonny and Mary Read. The artwork in this was stunning, and I enjoyed the story. There was a good balance between story and action, and I was never confused by a character or plot point. I'm excited to see where this female crew goes in the next volume - I will definitely be picking it up!
Also note - my e-copy was quite short due to a good quarter of it being filled with character summaries, art sketches/drafts and history of Bonny & Read's story. I quite enjoy reading these things at the end of a graphic novel, but I know some readers are uninterested.
This is a great volume to binge-read and I recommend it for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean and Daughter of the Pirate King.

I received an e-copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Pirate historical fiction based on the story of Anne Bonny. A central focus is the freedom of piracy which is rings less hollow given the feminist perspective. While a strong female protagonist with no romance is always a plus for me, the story never really gripped me. It might be because I have a harder time rooting for criminal protagonists because a part of me keeps hoping they get caught. It might be the red hair, but it gave me vibes of some of the flatter Red Sonja stories (go from A to B, kill everything between). I may pick up the next volume, but it would mostly be to support no-ro fiction. Good art, though.

I enjoyed the story and thought the artwork was just okay. It's great that it's based on a true story of female pirate Anne Bonny. I wish there had been more to the story - it seemed to end abruptly and it feels like the second half of the book is covers and process art. I realise volume 2 is available but I'm not sure I enjoyed it enough to read on.

4/5 because of that gorgeous art style!

OK, I knew I was going to love this from the moment I saw the cover! But Anne Bonny, Mary and the women from her newly-founded crew were amazing!

I’m a sucker for women in power, those who deny to be on their knees and fight back, no matter what. It delivered what I expected from a pirate story, so I’m glad I gave this one a chance.

Apparently, the story is also based on actual people, women who were pirates and whose legend is still alive. Thus, it was easy for me to love the way they’re portrayed: as powerful, witty, and relatable women that fight their way to survive against a world that’s ruled by men who think they can get away with their crimes.

It’s funny to see that pirates, who were the real criminals, have more honor than people who lead entire armies and countries.

Anyway, I liked the fact that we see all different types and sizes of women with interesting personalities who look after each other. The circumstances might have brought them together, but they have the potential to grow into a marvelous crew, one of those found families my heart always craves for.

The art is gorgeous, the action scenes were quite good and the pacing made me read it in one sit! There’s always something going on so you never get bored. On the contraire, I wish this was longer! I seriously hope we can see the next volume soon because I can’t wait to know what happens with these badass pirates!

This book is not hisotically accurate. At ALL. Especially considering the dynamics between Rackham, Read and Bonny. But it was still a fun read. Don’t try to use this as historical research.
