Reacher has jumped the shark

This series has been heading downhill for me. This book takes the cake. Reacher has changed, not evolved, but changed into a violent, thuggish guy who really isn't concerned about either aspect; at least his author isn't. This book is mean and in many ways lazy. The characters are stereotypes and written without much regard for how that reads. The plot has holes and fills them with unnecessary violence as a clear disdain for intelligence.

One of the best Reachers in a long while. Perhaps second only to Killing Floor. Loved it!

After 24 books and nearly 24 years Jack Reacher has, alas, finally jumped the shark. This read is both laugh out loud silly and disturbing. The plot is absurd. Violence and mayhem rule nearly every chapter. Jack tells us on page one that the unnamed city he has arrived in by bus has half a million people and a police department twelve hundred officers strong. Really? In scene after scene of senseless brutal violence, including one memorable account of a shootout in a lumber yard where a couple of dozen Albanian gangsters die with Jack personally shooting and killing 12 gang members, nary a single police officer arrives on the scene. There is not any police presence in the entire book.
What the hell? They were all off on vacation at the same time? Reacher would have you believe that the entire city is ruled by warring factions of Ukrainian and Albanian gangsters and that city's population was more or less divided equally as snitches for the rival gangs. Jack's solution? Kill them all and do so without suffering any serious injury to himself. What a farce.

Hands down this is the worst Jack Reacher book in the entire series of Reacher books. Like many others here I question whether Child did the writing. This is no Jack Reacher I'm familiar with.

Reacher does some things that are out of his character..... almost feel like Lee did not write this.

Three stars because it was readable. But this is a very different Jack Reacher from the early books and I am not enjoying his company. There is minimal detective work and maximum bloodshed - villains killed off left, right and centre. He picks up a waitress, they spend one night together and then she comes along for all the killing too, as do some of her friends. It doesn't feel remotely realistic or credible that this could happen. Firstly that they could get away with it and secondly that the civilians would all be so cool with it - no delayed shock, no moral qualms.

Abby looked at him. As if to ask, are we going to kill them all? But not disapproving. Not accusatory. Merely a request for information. He thought to himself, I hope so.

The early books built to a crescendo but this was just one long sustained killing fest with no real suspense.

"It's a great feeling," Reacger said. "Isn't it? You're alive and they ain't."

It took me a week to read it - usually I knock off a Lee Child book in a day or two. If you like these books, I wouldn't say don't read this, but I would warn you that you'll probably be disappointed.

No good deed goes unpunished. Reacher finds this out the hard way. Then again, I love how Reacher sees himself as this throwback to a more primitive type of human who is nothing but a killer, yet he goes out of his way to help this old couple and the waitress. Way out of his way. Great story. Loved the way it just kept building and building. Lots of action and killing. Reacher is one of a kind.
