eh. this book was okay for me. it had so much football in it, and i kept on getting confused. i also like the movie much better, because it seems like he lets go of Nikki faster in the movie, and still in the book i feel that he didnt really let go of Nikki. this has often been compared to The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but i think that The Perks is SOOOO much better.
I decided to read the book after I watched the movie. The movie is amazing and definitely one of my favorites. I thought the book was good, but not the best. I loved the characters and how Pat went about his relationship with each one of them. Pat's view on life is so hopeful and tragic, which made me like him even more. There were some points where the book dragged on a little, but when certain events occurred, I was extremely curious to see how they'd play out!
Pat Peoples has just returned home from the "Bad Place", and he's making an effort to better himself, because "apart time" with his wife will be over soon and he wants her to find him as a better person. Except we realize that Pat is a little (okay, very) troubled, and his view of the world is distorted.
It's not hard to believe Pat is a real person. On top of that, he's very likeable, because he's always trying to be a better person and not hurt anyone. And even though you never believed that, it's still interesting to see how strongly Pat himself believes it. The story unfolds very nicely, and the ending is the only way it wouldn't get cliché and still be good.
I really liked the book, and I was eager to see how they adapted it as a movie. Well, let's just say maybe you should watch the movie first and not be disappointed like I was.

One of those rare moments where the movie adaptation far outshines the book.
While I still enjoyed this book, and it contained a lot of the quirky charm that the movie has, it just didn't read as well for me.
I think this is due to the outstanding performances of the two leads in the movie and their wonderful chemistry together.
I just didn't feel any sort of romantic spark from book Pat and Tiffany and the whole thing felt just a little bit dull and repetitive.
I did have high expectations for this novel and perhaps that's why it fell a little short, but overall this was still a fun and easy little read with funny and likeable characters. The book was pretty funny due to some great Pat quotes I will give it that.

Admittedly, I have seen the movie at least 10x and I had not read the book. Guilty, I know. But I decided to finally listen to the audiobook.
Pat is one of my favorite main characters in a book because of his attitude/personality, internal dialog, and bluntness. I'm not actually sure I like Tiffany all that much, but she's the perfect complement to Pat's optimism and ignorance.
Pat's insistence on constantly comparing his life to a movie and expecting things to happen cinematically is the most heart-wrenching part of this story. The reader isn't really pushed to want Nikki and Pat to be together again, but Pat's mental state and expectations for a happy ending put a lot of emotion into this story. It's all evened out by the dialog and comedic relief, though.
Maybe it was the narrator of the audiobook, but more so I think it was the material... it was hilarious. I laughed especially hard at Pat's thoughts during and after reading The Bell Jar. It's ok, Pat, I too wanted to rip The Bell Jar in half.
There are some significant differences between the book and movie (most significantly the dance competition), but I enjoyed that they weren't identical. There's much more time spent on the relationship between Pat and his brother. LOVED the montage scene that Pat laid out to explain the dance practice month.

I liked it. I was not overwhelmed by the story, but it was still good.
I couldn't put this book down! I haven't seen the movie and didn't know what to expect, but wow! I loved it! It made me laugh and made me cry! I only wished Nikki wasn't so happy at the end.
