To be honest, I’d give this book 4.5 stars but want to acknowledge that rating is very specific to someone like me: in her late 20s, single, with a massive travel itch, and who likes to imagine herself falling in love with the 29 year old-ish guy waiting at my airport gate. I also have a high affinity and tolerance for comedy writer humor and talk too much. Honestly, I was this book’s target audience to a T - I absolutely binged it and am minutes away from booking a flight for my next adventure. And while, yes, many of the stories center around foreign lovers, they more importantly reminded me that travel, especially solo or friend travel, highlights the best and worst of us so that we always come back a little more self-aware and grounded.

Sexual travel escapades of an American single girl. Should have been a chick flick at max.

I don't particularly enjoy reading travel memiors but needed one for the NYPL Challenge. I thought this sounded interesting. I discovered I don't like reading conquest memiors either. I finished this but it was definitely a challenge
This is one of those books which will give you wanderlust - even if you don't want all of your adventures to go exactly as Kristin's did.
I loved following her around the world as she shared her travel memories. It's not a surprise that she's a comedy writer - this is a fun book. There are times when things didn't go well but Kristin still managed to find the humour and share the lighter side of the situation.
What I was Doing While You Were Breeding isn't a book for the fainthearted. The first chapter alone has drugs, sex and Amsterdam dance music. And there are some apologies throughout the book to the author's father for revealing some of her travel antics. And whilst that might make this book not everyone's cup of tea - I had fun travelling vicariously though Kristin (also after reading this book I feel like we are friends so I feel no hesitation in calling the author by her first name. That is all.).
As much as I enjoyed travelling places I've not been as a voyeur to Kristin's exhibitions what I enjoyed most was her insight to her own psyche. This isn't a travel guide nor is it a what not to do on holidays. But rather it's just one woman's adventures as she experiences the world as all it has to offer. I could relate to her in parts and I loved how she owned herself and her actions.
My takeaway from the book? Be brave. Have your adventures and learn to live in the moment. And if you kiss a few gorgeous foreign boys in the process - more power to you.

I wanted to like this way more than I did- overall it was an "ok" book for me. I listened to the audiobook version of this memoir (thumbs up to the author for also narrating the audiobook version, I always appreciate and enjoy memoirs more when the author narrates) and found the story to be interesting but nothing life changing for me. I appreciated Kristin's take on living life to the fullest (or trying to, at least) while traveling and finding men to love worldwide. But I just never really felt a connection to her journey or the lessons she learned. Maybe it's because I do want the whole marriage/kids thing eventually and can recognize that I want this without being scared. Maybe it's because I can't afford to take off for months on end to travel so I didn't relate to any of her travels. I don't know. This didn't end up being a winner for me but I'm sure there are plenty of people that would completely relate to her journey and love this book. Just not me.
