I enjoyed re-reading Solaris, this time for a book club. It is a good one for generating discussion and original in the alien described. This is one of the few, maybe the only piece of fiction I've encountered with a truly alien...alien. Although, I found the invented history of research surrounding the alien planet interesting, it sometimes went on for longer than I could focus.
Spoiler
This was a very interesting concept, and I had no idea from start to finish where the story was going to end up. The comparison between the men studying Solaris and those sent on religious pilgrimages was really striking. Men tend to explore not to seek knowledge and understanding, but to impose their own beliefs and worldview onto their subjects. This is evident in the way Kris chooses to stay on Solaris at the end of the novel in hopes of being able to relive and re-do his past despite the planet itself having learned all it could from him. To truly learn from Solaris, Kris must learn to turn inward rather than closing his eyes to the truth of his own nature and that of his alien counterpart.

Solaris is the story of three scientists grappling with an extraterrestrial intelligence, their own subconsciouses, and the meaning of humanity.
This book is not what I was expecting. At times extremely tense and often comedic in an odd, dark way. The story and the questions posed throughout the book will be on my mind for a while. I would definitely recommend this to fans of science fiction, but I caution readers to visit Solaris with an open mind.
My only qualm is that there are issues with the Kilmartin and Cox translation, and I wish I had the ability to read the original Polish version!
