and suddenly i get Johns...in that moment Hal ruminates on Kyle's artsy fidgeting, his inability to ever feel satisfied with his work...while Hal does just what he needs to get the job done...Johns identifies with Hal, seeing himself as a functional workman with a clear vision and the tools to see it through! i will be reading this run...
also while i kinda find it a copout to retcon the Parallax thing, i also admire the thematic idea behind that and Hal's general return...as Batman says, "this universe could use more light"...it's all part of the Ultimate Age's complex relationship with its predecessor, attempting to bring back some of the magic of the Silver/Bronze Age without erasing accountability to the past entirely...it's an inspired idea and watching the pathos of these comics slowly shift over a few years is a real joy

I'm still having trouble getting into Green Lantern at the right time. I try taking advice from bloggers and from my husband but I'm still always confused when I pick up a volume of Green Lantern. There is just way too much backstory in the Green Lantern universe for a noob. Sigh...
Even though I was thoroughly confused at the beginning of this I did find myself really enjoying the story even though I felt like I'd missed a ton of stuff. I was really grateful that I read the introduction so that I knew a little bit about what was going on. I really like Hal Jordan's character. I like how assey he is. But it was interesting to sort of see him beat down by Parallax and the Spectre and better yet seeing him overcome it.
You guys know Batman is my fav, right? Well Batman was a jerk in this and I was happy to see him socked in the face by Hal Jordan. It was awesome.

you think you'd hear 'yeah, this one is about hal jordan who has been dead for a few years after being possessed by both the spirit of the embodiment of fear as well as the ghost of righteous servant of god himself as well as several other green lanterns each with their own personal histories and backstories, some of which go back decades' and think 'how can this possibly be a good place to start reading green lantern?'
and that was me. because... yeah, how do you read all that and expect this is something you'll enjoy while having next to no context for a character save for what i remember about john stewart from the justice league animated series. but rebirth (which kicks off the highly recommended and acclaimed geoff johns green lantern run) was right at the top of people's lists on a variety of different sources, so... i figured why not? most comics are written to just be picked up anyways!
impressively enough, i feel like i didn't miss a beat. of course i would've connected more were there a history i shared with these characters. no doubt if i'd known more hal jordan and experienced his sacrifice first hand, his return would've felt more triumphant. or maybe i would've understood more about kyle's journey across space and time, and his feelings about taking on the mantle of lantern in hal's absence.
in all honesty though, little of that impacted my enjoyment of this title. everything that you'd need to know, like what's going on with hal? who are the little blue men? what is parallax? who is spectre? it'll all be answered for you. and if you feel like it wasn't, there's a whole appendix in the back where geoff has taken the time to explain in pretty great detail more of the obvious questions.
overall, this was a pretty fun start! hal's return felt triumphant despite my lack of context, and i loved what i read between him and his father. i like kyle and john a lot as lantern's, and i really enjoyed the dynamic that green arrow (a hero i'm entirely unfamiliar with) got to share with all of the lanterns. my one real complaint might be the writing for batman? that felt off to me, but again, i'm missing the context of what hal did pre-his sacrifice when he was a vessel for parallex initially, so maybe bats is justified in his feelings idk. but yeah, this was a fun time, all capped off with the beginning, which maybe is one of the best single issues of a comic i've ever read? what a perfect little ending.

I've always been fascinated by Green Lantern but never gave myself the chance to dig in. This was an incredible starting point. Powerful story, beautifully told and illustrated. And for a newcomer, a great introduction to all things Green Lantern. I ended up reading most of this book twice, parts of it three times - the story prompts you go back and think a little more deeply or a little differently about prior details. So rich and so rewarding.

Wow, that was exciting.
It took a little while to really get started, seeing as I had to put all the pieces together. I didn't have any prior knowledge of what led up to any of this honestly, but I came out better than fine!
This plot is really intricately designed, and I dig that. The dialogue was good and there were a lot of small cameos by other heroes aside from the Lantern Corps. The artwork was amazing.
I really like that this introduces more of who the other Green Lanterns are. It focuses on Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner and throws Kilowog in for good measure. My absolute favorite scene was when Hal was briefly describing all of the Lanterns' fighting styles in a way that also described the personalities of each of the Lanterns.
This is a must-read for serious DC fans. I would advise reading whatever leads up to this first for the best reading experience, but it was still awesome.
