The first third of the book was very well-written and provided a great setup for what could have been a very inventive mystery novel. The middle third lagged and engaged in some hackish storytelling conventions. The final third was just about the most abysmally stupid reveal I've ever read followed by several chapters of groan-inducing melodrama. Ruined the whole book for me. Let this book serve as a cautionary tale to authors: just because you think your readers won't see it coming doesn't mean it's a good idea.

This book was enjoyable as long as I didn’t take it too seriously. However, I didn’t like the romance much and most of the characters are pretty unlikable. The main driving force in We Were Liars is the anticipation of the ending, which I thought was well worth the wait.
The writing style was mainly fragmented, choppy and very dramatic in its overuse of metaphors and short sentences. Whilst it is slightly irritating, it suits the main character of Cadence, a teenager who experiences everything as if it is the end of the world. It also made for a very fast read.
I would say it is worth a read purely for the ending, which genuinely surprised me whilst still making total sense.

##not really spoilers, but maybe## The twist was exceptionally executed, but honestly this was fascinating even without the brilliant reveal. The mother daughter tension, the fairytales growing increasingly more fractured, and the King Lear inspired madness all made this more than just another zinger. Lockhart writes this family dynamic well, as any daughter of one of three daughters will tell you.

I didn't have any problems following the story, as I saw other reviews pointing towards this... to me, the parts that were hallucinations were a little confusing at the time but that's because I was meant to be confused & it all made sense at the end!

I read this book twice: once for fun and once for class. I enjoyed it a lot more the second time because for some reason, I was just unable to follow the storyline the first time. Once I was able to discuss the book with peers and my professor, I was able to wrap my head around the fact that some confusing parts were only confusing because they were the main character's hallucinations, and I didn't get that the first time around. The plot twist reminded me a lot of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, which I absolutely loved, hence only 3/5 stars for We Were Liars because it didn't top the Mara Dyer series for me.
