First thing I will say is that I liked this book. It won't seem like it somewhat in this review, but I DID. And I will continue the series to find out what happens next in [b:The Glass Magician|22341276|The Glass Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy, #2)|Charlie N. Holmberg|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1410466975s/22341276.jpg|41739586]. The story begins with Ceony not getting to live her dreams as a material magician working with metal, but instead being forced to be a Folder and her medium paper. No one wants to be a Folder because paper is the weakest material, but at the top of her class, and with so few Folders left, the choice is made for her.

Then she meets her mentor, Emery Thane and he is nothing like she expected.

Perhaps the man wasn't so mad after all. Or maybe it's just a madness that I can learn to appreciate.

She goes on an adventure through his literal heart in order to save him, when mysterious Lyra rips it out of his chest with magic. Lyra is also a magician, but her medium is the human body... insert ominous music here.

My problem with this book lies in the fact that it could have been even better if the romantic aspect was left out. Ceony spends several chapters where she realizes she can be friends with her mentor and learn to like being a Folder because he makes it fun, and then suddenly is falling in love with him. I just think the turn was too sudden and the feelings forced. He disappears for days they have 2 conversations when he gets back, sh** hits the fan and suddenly she has all these feelings. I could have done without it or with it flowing more nicely is all.

Other than that, good read and I finished it quickly.
adventurous challenging dark emotional inspiring mysterious fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

You have to suspend your disbelief and just accept the way the world works, but once you do it is a great, fun, and charming read!

I love the magic in this, but the plot was cliche and a little painful to get through.

3.5-4

A good little story, but the latter half of the middle sort of dragged a bit.

But I can definitely say I want my own little paper dog like Fennel!

I think I agree with the reviewer who said this book changes in the middle from a 'hey, isn't folding paper cool and who is this mysterious fellow' to 'why am I having to experience all these flashbacks. Interestingly though, I don't feel any more or less bivalent / ambivalent to the hero as a result, although I would have wanted to see Ceony's life rather than his, which is a rather predictable 'I fell in love with a bad girl' story. I'll read the next one, but I'm reading something else first rather than shooting back into it.

Ceony: Is it "See-oh-knee", Or am i mispronouncing it?

So, the book is pretty cute. It felt rushed most of the time and I did not feel that I had enough time to become attached to the characters.

Other than that, nice quick read into an alternate magical world. The "man-made elemental" magic was a refreshing new concept and I appreciate that. It definitely separates this book from the other "magic" fiction out there.

My feelings about this book are lukewarm. The premise of this book was good. The writing was decent. I was entertained. However, I felt that the characters were lacking depth. The imagery also seemed to be missing something. While I could easily picture the story, it was like old construction paper that had faded with time and light. Nothing was vivid. Furthermore, the flow of the book seemed off. It was too simple; there were no peaks and valleys to the plot, just one hill. Also, there was a very random discussion of religion a spirituality that was out of place.

A fun, enjoyable book. Not very taxing on the brain, a bit childish in the beginning but once the adventure started I really got into it and will probably read the others.
