The only reason this is over 1 star is because I kept WANTING something to happen. The sense of time was off throughout the book - three days is referred to as "a few weeks," the dressmaker arrived "a few hours" before her client wakes, bathes, and dines. The 21 year old assassin who has carefully trained and researched to appeal to ancient king decides to launch into a solo immediately on being announced at the ball? For three years of planning, she has no plans, is surprised at everything, and is stupid as hell. Makes not one rational decision and whines constantly. There was no connection or chemistry, she is too dumb to understand him. Ugh. Will not continue the series.

2.25 stars ???
I have got no idea how to rate this book because on the one hand, I enjoyed it and read it in one sitting but on the other, it was borderline terrible.
- the plot had SO much potential but we learn nothing during this story. it almost felt like a novella and would have benefited from being 100 or so pages more. we don’t know anything about this curse, or why our female hero’s role in it and I felt sorry for the winter king to be honest.
- adara (is that even her name???) was unlikeable. she learns nothing in the book and she is boring. she doesn’t translate off the page at all. I thought her stubbornness came across as childish.
- the book is very repetitive and our heroine repeats the same phrase constantly about killing the winter king.
- I did think the writing was easy to read and I felt like it ended it enough of a cliffhanger to make me want to read more but this sadly reads like a novella from a fifteen year old novice.

once you get over the second hand embarrassment at the beginning, this was a fun beauty and the beast retelling that i enjoyed reading and will definitely be reading the sequel. i do wish that it was longer so that there could have been more detail and a more in-depth look into the characters, but i’m hoping that we will get that in the next book

This book made me mad. It was entertaining to read and the exact trope I love (fantasy enemies to lovers arranged marriage etc), but Adara made me so mad. I understand she hates him because of what she thinks he did to her sister but she never fucking asked him anything about it? She had like a bajillion opportunities where she could’ve just been like hey I need you to explain what happened to my sister before I can marry you cause otherwise I cannot love you etc. Like she could’ve voiced her concerns but instead she made him love her, slept with him, and then tried to kill him? That just really bothered me and rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like she was deceiving him so it just felt like he wasn’t really able to consent fully if he didn’t know what she was doing. Idk I just felt very uncomfy with that. The rest of the book was entertaining and I did enjoy it but that last part just made me uncomfortable and kind of ruined the book for me. I just wish they wouldn’t have slept together when they did.
