Putting this down for now. I wasn't sold on the plot, so I kept putting it down. Will try again soon.

I massively enjoyed this hi octane sci fi thriller. It’s got some of my favourite things - yet another evil corporation, monsters, super powers, and space.

I enjoyed the set up and the concept - especially as you spend ages worrying about the jail break only for the whole thing to be taken over by aliens but it totally works!

Kenzie acclimatises pretty fast to the events, which is my only real niggle, and I do like that you can see some things have more of an impact on her. I really liked her relationships with Mia and Rune, both so different but really help show how things change through the book.

I liked Cage, Alexei and Matt - and all the section 5 kids, but the dynamic between those three, Mia and Rune was fun. Plus I thought the jail break was pretty well thought out.

I’m dying for more about Kenzie’s parents, and the background to how everyone got arrested, but especially more on what happens next! I full on NEED book 2 right now.

This author was definitely going through some things while writing this book...
Summary of the book:
Capitalism good, governments bad!
Wait, capitalism is bad?
We're dying!
It's okay, let's make out
Okay, we're still dying!

More to come at the Liveshow on 3/31

2.5 Stars for me. The concept was cool, aliens, space stations, super powered teens, however, the execution was a little lackluster. There was a main female characters who couldn't make up her mind how she wanted to act, a bad case of insta-love, and other characters who kept flip flopping how they wanted to act.

I'm a sucker for super powers, so I knew I was going to like this one. And for the most part, I did. Criminalizing super powers is a dystopia I could, unfortunately, believe all too well, and it was a powerful uncovering of those secrets. I loved the characters, and mourned the ones that died, but I was a little confused about the "rest" of the prisoners who basically huddled over elsewhere and let the main characters mix and mingle undisturbed. They never asked to have their inhibitor chip removed, and never gave a reason for not doing so. We were given one name to represent all the rest of them, and she was annoying. Just odd. Then, the big bad aliens came. They were sufficiently scary. The was a sequence where I may have yelled, "No, you left the stunner with the other group, idiots!", but mostly things checked out. It was the end that I really struggled with. Like, yelling at the book struggles. There is going to be a bit of a spoiler ahead, just FYI. If you want to stop reading now, just know I'll probably read the next one because I have SO MANY QUESTIONS, but I'm not sure I'm going to like it. Anyway, why did ALL of the other kids on the other levels have to just die? Didn't that healing dude do anything? He was apparently exhausted from doing something, but not a single one was salvageable??? He could've saves a few before his power ran out or whatever. It just made him seem way less powerful than the girl who could heal herself, and just unnecessary. If you're going to have a group of super powered people who just hang around and watch anyway, why not add a few more to give plausibility? Also, the interpersonal dynamic between Kenzie and Cage felt forced at the end. I'd like their relationship up to then, not really looking forward to where it's going to have to go from here. Anyway, I liked it. Didn't love it. Will look for the next one at the library.

i think the pace in this book was good enough, definitely better in comparison to other books i've read these days cause i've been reading alot that are just reeaallyy slow paced for no reason.
the whole "we are not alone in the universe" and its actually terrifying monsters genuinely caught me off guard, so that was something new too
because i feel like i never get surprised with media anymore which gets a little tiring. and while it wasn't completely and utterly unique or a new concept at all, i genuinely enjoyed reading it and was very entertained. a non-OP main character was a breath of fresh air to me especially being so used to characters that can burn down entire countries or control time or freeze everything - great.
