I’ve read so much that it's not often nowadays that a book will have a deep and profound effect on me, but this book... this damn book...

I felt this story on a on a feministic, emotional, social justice, and right in the ouch-y feels kind of level that I found myself actually sobbing at one point, but then, strangely, I was laughing only a few pages later.

This is actually the first book where I fully annotated and wrote notes on my experience with the book through a series of colour sticky notes to show a visual representation of how I felt while I was reading. It wasn't until I finished the book and reflected on all those coloured tabs at just how much yellow (funny/feel good moments) and pink (romance and spice), were mixed in with the orange (red flags/ anger) and blue (sad). And, if not the actual content of the book itself, but I think the tabs made me realise that in relationships containing domestic/emotional abuse, there is also some very sweet, romantic, and happy times. It only served as a reminder of it not always bad... it's not always doom and demise... but that's why it's so challenging to leave a relationship like this.

I stand with those who are experiencing domestic/ emotional abuse. I also stand with those who have broken the cycle and said 'it ends with us'.

I'm not sure if I like this book or not. The message this book tried to tell was probably the part I liked the most. It actively tries to make the reader understand what
abusers and those they abuse
go through mentally and physically, the struggles and barriers, and I definitely learned something new.
However, the writing outside the main plot/theme was lackluster for me. It read like a 12-year-old's diary, and I ended up not giving a shit about Lily's life outside of Ryle and Atlas because of it, and that's disappointing. Lots of telling, not showing, lots of repetition in writing, a few cliches... some eye rolling is inevitable.
There is a prequel coming out this year. Will I read it? If a copy ever finds its way into my hands, sure, I'll try it. If not, I won't actively seek it out. I recommend the same for this book if anyone is interested.

This book was a rollercoaster ride for me. Honestly, I really didn't like it at the beginning. I thought the writing wasn't that great. And, I thought both the plot and characters were unrealistic. I didn't like Ryle from the start
for good reason!
.
And personally, I only liked Lily's journal entries during Part 1. However, once we got to Part 2, my feelings about the book started to change. Colleen Hoover did a fantastic job putting outsiders in the mind of a victim who is in an abusive relationship. People ask why do they stay with their abusers? Why don't they leave them? This book shows readers why doing that isn't always so simple.

So, I love the message and how it's told in this book. However, that doesn't change the fact that I wasn't of the writing, especially during the first part of the book. I will say, I LOVE Atlas, and plan on reading the sequel, It Starts With Us, when it comes out in the fall. So, I will probably reread this book around then to refresh my memory. If so, we'll see if my opinion/rating will change then.
