The Book of Two Ways

Jodi Picoult

3.7 AVERAGE

Okay. I didn’t like this one at first. But a little after half I was sucked in and am v pissed at that ending, even though that is the best ending there could be for a book like this.

Anyway. Reminds me of me, in, like, not even the same universe of sameness, but also, same. And I feel like JP wrote the end of Brian and Wyatt with some real life experience in there because….wow.

Also, bravo to JP for her research and commitment to this kind of thing. I am always impressed but this was next level.

This book BLEW my mind. The story and characters were so intricate with a fascinating plot about two different ways her life could go. I could tell Jodi Piccoult did her research! I learned so much about ancient Egypt, and death doulas. Like wow, who even knew that was a thing?

(Just gotta put this here: there is a bunch of sex in this book. Didn’t bother me, I thought it went very well with the story, but it might be too much for some people)

I will be thinking about this book for years to come. It is one that makes you THINK.

ALSO, why don’t we get to KNOW who she picks in the end?! Talk about the ultimate cliffhanger!

I don’t ever want to read another sentence about Egyptology!

Mildly disappointing overall. I enjoyed the deep-dives on Egyptology. I found the long passages on death too hard/sad to read. I usually like books with shifting timelines and flashbacks, but these often felt like whiplash and hard to track. It was clear the protagonist loved her daughter and that love was a driver in big decisions, but the book didn't spend enough time on that relationship. Finally, the ending was too ambiguous for my tastes.

A fascinating story not least because of the Egyptian angle. Another swift and very enjoyable read from one of my favourites.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix

I started off this book not really enjoying it and I’m a huge Jodi Picoult fan so was a little disappointed but I’m so glad I stuck with it. About half way through it just all clicked for me and I loved it. It broke my heart into a million pieces which is typical of this author but it’s also a beautiful story full of a well researched novel about Egypt and the book of two ways which was fascinating as well as her job as a death doular. Great read

Love the author. Love the story line and the first chapter had me hooked. But I got lost in Egypt. And then I ended up not liking the main character at all. Normally this author throws me for a loop and the end of her novels are so unpredictable, but not this one. I was actually hoping for an unpredictable ending. Still would have been a 4, but I just got lost on all the Egypt stuff. The writing was lovely and for sure it’s a 3.5, but just didn’t like the main character and was hoping for a different ending. Still recommend!

Wow, I never thought I would say this about a Jodi Picoult book, but this was bad. I listened to the audio book and had to double check to make sure I wasn't listening to a lecture on Egypt and Physics. I also did not like the main character, Dawn.
