On page 390: That's a fatphobia dump almost worthy of J. K. Rowling. Also the misogyny of Uncle Ralph—and thanks to him, also Christopher—kind of makes me feel murderous. On the other hand, Uncle Ralph turns out to be the main villain.

This series is definitely not my favorite D. W. J. work. Howl's Moving Castle is such a delight, as is Dark Lord of Derkholm

The Lives of Chrestomanci, by Diana Wynne Jones

i love these books so much they r so clever and i go :O :O :O :O at every plot twist, even tho they r o obviously for kids and the plot always wraps up waaay too nicely, i still love <3

I'm not sure why I only gave this three stars the first time, because now that I'm rereading it I feel discouraged about the prospects of ever finding something more enjoyable. Rude, DWJ...

I just devoured this one. Very satisfying. Halfway through it I was wondering where did Chrestomanci's incredible savoir faire came from, then the author made sure the reader understood that Christopher is really too young to be anything and, truly, no Chrestomanci is complete before accepting his destiny (like Pichus, all of them). Okay then, he became more intense as he grew up, I'll buy it.
