Bec and Izzy have been friends their whole lives, but suddenly Bec went to Izzy's place to find Izzy's body lying at the bottom of the stairs with lots of blood. And there are actually more of those friendships.

Bec and Izzy have the most toxic friendship ever, and it made me wonder how old they are because it felt like I was reading a YA high school drama. Instead of giving off a scary or suspense vibe, I'm just annoyed with them. The characters were so bland and unlikable.

The story becomes so repetitive and annoying. And it picked up around 70% and I thought the ending would satisfy me, but no, it was so stupid, ridiculous, and bad.

TW: this book contains cheating, really toxic and manipulative characters.

I have been looking forward to reading this book for months!

I found it to be… okay. It had a lot of tropes I’m starting to find tedious (idiotic MC, cheating partners, bratty kids that can do no wrong). The book was fine overall but nothing mind-blowing or new.

While I empathized with Bec at the beginning, she started to get on my nerves quickly. She was such a doormat! She should have cut off contact with Izzy at Christmas. It was frustrating and baffling how she continued to go back for more time and time again.

Part of what made this book a bit disappointing was the total lack of sympathetic characters. They were all objectively terrible (except Missy who just disappeared by the end).

I found the sections between the event and the conclusion super tedious and drawn out. The ending itself was way out of left field levels of implausible. I’m still not entirely convinced by the motive there.
Spoiler It crossed my mind that Tilly had pushed Izzy. Now wouldn’t that have been a turn up? It would explain her apparent newfound violence and aggression too?

Lastly I was distracted by a the sloppy writing within the book: using the wrong character’s names, poor grammar, and clunky sentences.

Ok this was pretty good but the use of the word friend is very interesting given that anyone who has had a true adult friend knows there is no friendship here. Right from the jump it all seemed so unrealistic that anyone could have this awful of a relationship and still say thats my best friend. As for the story.....again i kept coming back to THESE ARE NOT FRIENDS which was abit annoying. It reads like a high school fight except someone dies in the end. The main character is also incredibly annoying????? I dont know. I wouldnt recommend this.

Thought I'd worked out the twist at the end but I hadn't. Characters are very solid too with a lot of depth. Highly recommend!

my best friend’s murder by polly phillips depicts the complexity of a lifelong toxic friendship. izzy and bec have grown up together most of their life. izzy’s been there through bec’s hardest times and so does the other. however, like any normal friendships that has been there since the earliest of childhood, there’s a dark side of jealousy and silent pettiness that was brought along with them from the past to the now.

what intrigued me towards this book was the concept of it all. a murder of a best friend, very whodunnit. everyone who is everyone is a major suspect before and after it happened. they all have their deepest and darkest secrets that—in a way—is dangerously intertwined with our victim here. following my intrigued self, i chose to pick up this book for the train ride home yesterday and oh the looks i got! hahaha! if you own the arc, surely you’d know how eye-catching and bold the arc cover is and that’s the copy i own so just imagine the looks
