Being unwanted is painful especially if you are experiencing it. And knowing that this happened in real life is just saddening.
Maybe because I read this alone or because I read this outside of her target age group (if she had one) but I did not see the masterpiece in this. I feel like I read some child's diary. I say a child's diary because it mostly was a description of events and maybe a, "I felt sad." here and there. A teenager would have written more about their emotions. Also, I understand that she was neglected and felt inferior her whole childhood, but after reading other books about abuse and substance abuse, I cannot read her words as pitiful as she wants me to. I'm sorry she feels cheated but I hope she realizes she wasn't too bad off. She was even removed from the house for a time to live in boarding houses. She might have felt embarrassed certain days but she had friends who cared for her and she didn't have to live in fear of her step-mother abusing her. She was given schooling (even college), food, and clothes, and had relatives that loved her even if it wasn't her father and step-mother. I just am not clear about the hype of this book.

This book was fine. Adeline is the last daughter before her father remarries a half french/ chinese woman and bears him two children.
As the youngest of the unwanted family, as well as being a daughter, she is mostly ignored. She lives in a rich household but the lack of love makes her feel like she is suffering a fate worth than death.
blahblahblahblahb semi happy ending bc she at least gets her freedom if not love

Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down. I have read this book several times. Whenever I feel myself strangled by the pressure of being the "smart" kid, this book puts me at ease. This story is worth reading because I believe that everyone can relate to Adeline on some level.
My daughter read this book when she was at high school and I've been intending to read it ever since. The author wrote her memoirs in the book ([b:Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots|1746572|Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots|Adeline Yen Mah|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-6121bf4c1f669098041843ec9650ca19.png|1429862]), and then took the segment of her childhood up to the age of 14 and wrote it in this book for children.
At first I was finding the writing style too simplistic and I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the book because of that, but I became accustomed to the style and was soon fully involved in the story. I was so involved that there were several times I was almost crying at the loneliness and misery of that poor little girl with her disinterested father, her nasty stepmother, and siblings who were frequently cruel. This truly is the story of a Cinderella, but one of resilience that keeps her spirit alive.
