This was a fun, cute, and quick historical romance.

Listened to this on audiobook. The narrator was really good. I was surprised that this book was 230 pages because the audio book was just over 6 hours.

A moment of mistaken identity lands Major Kingsley with a black eye and Arabella being sent off to get married.

Now I don't think it's a spoiler, what happens is pretty obvious to me, but just in case this next part is behind spoiler tags.
SpoilerImmediately when Kingsley mentioned that he was also meeting the woman who was supposed to be his future bride, I knew it would be Arabella. I don't remember if Kingsley mentioned it to Arabella specifically or if he just thought it. It was a little annoying that I knew right away but neither character figured it out until they were face to face at what was supposed to be the first meeting between them.

Kingsley and Arabella were cute together. She's running away/wants a bit of freedom before she meets her betrothed and she runs into Kingsley again. He agrees to take her on a mini-adventure and it was fun.

One thing that did annoy me though,
Spoilerafter they have sex and it's the next morning, he leaves to go get breakfast for them and she wake up in the small amount of time he's gone, thinks he left her, not just for a moment but left her, left her and then she leaves heartbroken. He couldn't wake her up momentarily and say 'I'll be right back, getting us something to eat, stay here'?

I'll definitely read more Elizabeth Boyle in the future.

Not sure why this was on my to-read list as I haven't read any of the other books in the series, but I picked it up for a light read on the strength of the author's name. I really wish I hadn't.

This was really cute, and enjoyable and light read. There's a kind of twist, but it's easily figured out and doesn't detract from the story in any way. Loved the heroine, very independent.

This was fine. Predictable but fine.

Fun read with a Ferris Bueller's Day Off vibe. Lady Arabella escapes the suffocating confines of her father's estate to grab a small taste of freedom before she's forced to marry a stodgy old bachelor. Her father is furious with her because a handsome stranger made a spectacle of her at a ball, and now he's adamant that she marry before she's completely ruined. She runs into the rakish Kingsley, the stranger from the ball, after he almost runs her down with his carriage. Arabella convinces him to accompany her on her day of freedom, arguing that he owes her three favors for his behavior at the ball. What follows is an enjoyable romp through London, as Arabella and Kingsley fall for each other during their unusual adventures. I really enjoyed this.

3.5 stars. Super adorable. A bit silly at times, but in the best way. Loved Birdie and Kingsley so very much. I also really want to read Arabella's father's story now. Full review soon.

I discovered Elizabeth Boyle's historical romances about a year ago, and what a happy discovery it was for me. I particularly enjoy Boyle's novels in audiobook format as most of them are read by a favorite narrator of mine, Susan Deurdan. So when I saw Mad About the Major by Elizabeth Boyle available on my library's Hoopla website, I immediately checked it out.

What I Liked:

  • Mad About the Major is just such an incredibly fun story. Admittedly there are definitely moments of absolute silliness, but I enjoyed the overall story so much, that I was willing to go alone with it.

  • Arabella was a great heroine. She has a loving father and stepmother, but her father is a bit overprotective. Her father is also pressuring Arabella to marry a man she's never met, which is not something Arabella wants.

  • I found the first meeting (involving a case of mistaken identity) between Kingsley and Arabella quite entertaining, if, again, a bit silly. And that first meeting was the instigation for the whole story.

  • Kingsley was pretty great, too. He was definitely a guy who was good enough for Arabella, just as Arabella was good enough for Kingsley.

  • I really loved Arabella and Kingsley together. I could tell how wonderful a couple they would be.

  • I got such a kick out of Auggie, who was a secondary character that no one listened to. But such a nice man.

  • Susan Duerdan continues to be a favorite narrator, and she's fantastic narrating Mad About the Major.

What I Struggled With:

  • While I do like a bit of silliness, sometimes it was a bit much in this one.

  • This is a shorter novel, and almost all the romance happens in a day. While it wasn't instalove, they did fall for each other rather quickly.

  • There is a bit of a "surprise" twist towards the end, but it was pretty easy to see coming.

  • This cover is kind of cringe-worthy, in my opinion. It's his hair!

Final Thoughts:

Mad About the Major by Elizabeth Boyle was such a fun historical romance. While it wasn't perfect, I enjoyed every minute of this audiobook. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook

An enjoyable romp based on mistaken identities. The love affair is sudden, but it was a fun adventure. This is a nice, lighthearted novella.

For all that this was a novella, it was pretty well developed. It helps that it is a familiar theme.
Lady Arabella Tremont, duke's daughter, is trying to avoid an arranged marriage to a duke's heir, Somersale. While at the most notorious ball of the season (there's always at least ONE scandal), Arabella nearly becomes the scandal when a stranger walks her into the garden.
Major Kingsley has only recently returned to England after traveling Europe, even after the war ended. When he first meets Arabella, he is led to believe she is a notorious widow. But he soon discovers that is not the case, she is in fact a highborn lady. Which makes it even more surprising when he picks her up the next day, running away from home. To atone for his his behavior the night before, she makes him promise three boons...
Again, a very short story and a fun-and-fluffy read, but not bad.

This book is cute, and the concept of a single day with 3 asks is very cute, but the book didn’t go much beyond “cute” for me. I did also read this on its own outside of the series (which I think can work), but I also don’t feel a pressing need to jump into this series.
