The latest book about Masie Dobbs. I really enjoyed the first book of the series but there are some repetitive features in her subsequent books that are unnecessary and therefore annoying.
The first book covers how she got to be an educated woman. The story does not have to be repeated in every book. And Billy, her assistant, does not having to be the epitome of an East End boy always putting the kettle on an d saying thinhs will turn out alright.

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment in the Maisie Dobbs series. I have to say I find each book is better than the last. This is no exception with Winspear firmly cementing Maisie as both a woman of means and as a woman with wants and desires. We have seen a very removed, somewhat cold character of Maisie so far and it is refreshing to see her beginning to thaw.

My only criticism is that Maisie is solving another World War I mystery although it is now 1932. I would like to see her solving a few cases completely unrelated to the war, especially with the specter of World War II looming on the horizon.

This novel finds Maisie contacted by a pair of wealthy Americans who lost a son in France in World War I. His remains have only recently been discovered and with them a number of personal effects that created questions around his last months for his parents. Maisie takes the case and as it becomes clear that the death of Michael Clifton was not the accident his mother wants to believe, she may just be chasing a killer.

God Bless You, Jacqueline Winspear. I could have been a sodden, weepy mess, but you allowed me to reflect quietly. Thank you!

Works better for those following the series rather than standing alone as a good mystery.

These books do a really great job of summarizing important prior plot points. Sometimes when binging an old show in our new modern format, the moments after a commercial break can give watching a stop-start whiplash kind of feel, and books written over years when read in quick succession often fall victim to a similar problem that pulls the reader out of the story with an overload of overlapping information. Winspear's narrative recollections are brief and to-the-point. It's a small thing, but worth mentioning, lest this review simply read "Yes, yes! More, please!" -- which really would suffice.

This is one of my favorites in the whole series! I'm so excited to start the next book, and can't believe a new book will be out next month! There's something so captivating for me with this WWI time period and I adore the characters and this particular mystery was my favorite of the whole series. It was very interesting and I loved how it all tied together. I had my suspicions and they were part correct, but there was the unexpected twist, along with a few other unexpected twists at the end of this book. I also want to watch the Downton Abbey tv show that is British, and have ordered them off Amazon. I have gotten totally sucked into this time period and love it!

I have a few spoilers, scroll below for those (or skip them if you haven't read this!):

SO sad that Maurice died. I felt like it was coming, but I thought he would hold on for another book. I ::love:: James and WAHOO James for making the move with Maisie! I suspect that the secret service is going to want Maisie to work with them and I wonder how it will effect her current work and Billy. I was thrilled to see that Maurice left his estate to Maisie, and I hope that Maisie gives Billy some money so he can do his passage to Canada and have a nice life there, although, I will be so sad to see him go. I wonder if Maisie could offer Billy her flat in Pilmco... now that would be awesome... that is what I'm really hoping for! I hope Maisie doesn't choose work and career over James. He's perfect for her in every way and I love how they relate and how long they've known each other. And how James was at Pricilla's house was adorable. I hope Maisie doesn't sidestep this perfect lovematch for her career.... we'll see. Hopefully she can have it all, although, I wonder if she marries James, if she will have kids, and how that will work with her career. I can't imagine her not working...

Such touching war time stories in this book! And both sweet & sad events in Maisie's life. Another winner! . . . My library app has all the Maisie Dobbs audiobooks. It's been so fun to binge listen :)
