This was a really refreshing YA fantasy since South East Asian culture is often overlooked in the genre. A take on the Princess and the Pauper, it weaves the story of two girls fighting to save themselves from their lives while the threat of the kingdom falling into disaster looms over both their heads. The magic system was very creative, although I wish more time would have been dedicated to building it up and showcasing it, although I'm guessing the author is waiting for that in the next installment.

This isn't really grabbing me. Not bad, just not want I'm interested in right now.

Twins separated as babies, one raised as a princess, one growing up in an orphanage and now stealing for a living, are brought together by random circumstances. Also their family seems to have magic involving snakes and the setting is some sort of alternate India where magic may be real.

I'm more into the fantasy and this is more into the YA, I think?

This was my second read, but first time listening to Soneela Nankani narrating. She really added another layer to the book for me with her intonation, tone and proper pronunciation of all the delicious foods.
Princess Rani longs to escape her gilded cage and doesn’t want to marry her fiancee Said. Ria is a former orphan and now a thief with Amir.
They meet and decide to swap living as each other.
I prefer Ria as Rani’s story line. She is feisty and opinionated and has a good sense of justice.
Rani as Ria is a little whiney and naive.
I enjoyed this book more the second time around to prep for reading the second book.
The imagery is incredibly vivid and the worldbuilding great. It’s cool there are different kinds of magic.
