I liked this book a lot better than it's predecessor. Miss Peregrine's was a great intro into a fascinating world, but Jacob's objective was rather fuzzy so I never really knew where the story was headed. Hollow City is much more focused. My main criticism is of the protagonist--for a novel written in first person Jacob seems to be much more of a bystander. With a few key exceptions of course. But he took far too long to come into his own, and when he finally did, the book ended with a frustrating cliffhanger. Now to wait another 2-3 years to continue the story...
I thought it was a nice follow-up to the first story. I'm definitely interested in reading the 3rd one; hopefully it comes out sooner than later. Just like the first one, I was drawn in by the pictures and I like that the author gathered up these old photos and created such an interesting way to weave them all together. The Instagram of yore!
I am slightly disturbed by the love interest of the Jakob and Emma, with the age difference and all. The disgust was similar to what I felt about Edward and Bella (Twillight.) As an adult who occasionally talks to teen-aged to 20-something boys, I know for a fact that the maturity level isn't there to be in a serious committed relationship with a person who is 200 yrs old.
Ok, maybe I'm not being fair since I've not quite reached that far into my golden years. Maybe when I'm nearing 100, I'll start wanting to make out with 17 yrs olds too!

Basically the typical "middle" of a trilogy - pretty much a road book. (Not sure if this is just a trilogy - may be more than 3 in the end) One definitely needs to have read the first "Miss Peregrine" book before diving into this world. The Peculiars, fleeing from their island sanctuary and their "corrupted loop", are taking their headmistress (now in her bird form) to get help in changing her back into her human form. Lots of time jumps, run-ins with more peculiars, battles with wights and hollows, and a totally out of nowhere twist at the end. Looking forward to #3!
I listened to this as an audiobook, so I think I'm missing some of the aesthetic of the vintage photos, but I must say there are a lot of ways in which this book feels like just another sci-fi trilogy for the YA crowd. I like the historical element of time travel during WWII but even that becomes confusing, because the characters are outside of time in some aspects but still bound by time in others. It is entertaining for a long car ride but not my top recommendation as far as sci-fi novels go. I'll still read the third novel because now I have to know how it ends.

This sequel just could match up to the excellent and surprising first book. Tried to cram too much action into it, rather than focusing on the characters and world; which was the most interesting part of the first book.
It takes a special art to improve upon, and yet keep true to the original. Let me tell you, Ransom Riggs has it! Oh dear lord does he have it! Is it insensitive to talk about bombshells when it take place in 1940s Britain? I'll just assume so and leave you with his: HOLY HELL I DID NOT EXPECT THAT. One does not simply review Hollow City. It must be read to be understood.
This book started out a little slow, but once I got further into the book I ended up enjoying the story. In fact I will probably need to read the next one to find out what happens next.
