I feel like I liked this book a lot more than Shadow, it was a bit easier to follow (although the story got a lot weirder the further you go into this book) so it was a lot easier to enjoy!
Every character in this feels like a total mystery and never what they *really* seem to be and off that alone it has me itching for more!
This is the first book I’ve ever annotated and it feels super rewarding now having forced myself to take notes and remember all the insanely high concept stuff going on here.
“That we are capable only of being what we are remains our unforgivable sin. ”

Leaving without a rating. It's maybe not you, it's me, Book of the New Sun, but I love plot and storytelling and characterization, and you have none of that.
Off to my small discard pile you go.

Heady. Brilliantly penned. Suggestive. And in desperate need of a reread, The Claw of the Conciliator serves to elevate the deeds of Severian, our mysterious narrator to higher highs and increasingly epic challenges. His deeds, not all good, and his ommisions, while questionable, help give life to a dangerous and thrilling story of a world so very distant from our own. Wolfe is firing on all cylinders here.

Continues to be not an easy read. For some reason it's harder to follow than other fiction (maybe i should be audio-booking/multitasking). But it's still enjoyable, maybe like how an opera could be enjoyable, it sounds good even if you are missing content.
Some of the discussion here is helpful. But I'm sure there is lots of other discussion too.

Not as good as Shadow of the Torturer, in my eyes. I did like the alzabo scene, and the cave men, and the man holed up in the house. But the fountain and the witch sections felt rushed, and I really don't understand the necessity of that boring 20-page mythos and 10-page prose version of their play. Another thing I didn't like was how Severian reunited with the band in almost exactly the same way he met up with them again at the end of shadow of the torturer. I have to say at this point I'm at a crossroads, where I don't know if I should even bother with books 3 and 4, because while I enjoyed Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator did not impress me, barring a few select chapters.
