I really like the base concept of this book, but the writing style is a little too rough for me. It's a quick read with a somewhat disjointed writing style. I never got attached to Logan or Jessica, or got a feel for their characters. I was indifferent during their many perils (and I normally get overly involved while reading). To the book's credit, there's A LOT happening during a mere 24 hours -almost ridiculously so. (You'd almost think Logan's lastday would be used up fairly quickly, given all the times he's rendered unconscious.) Overall: great idea, not so great of a read.

I read this on the strength of an NPR article that was about sci-fi kids should read. Jason Sheehan said of it, "The madness of rote obedience, police states and xenophobia has rarely been better handled..." -- WHAT? That is absurd. This book was trememdously sloppy. It reads exactly like crappy 60's pulp sci-fi, not even good 60's crappy pulp sci-fi. The world-building was especially sloppy. There are SO MANY FLAWS with the central premise if you think about it for a single second, which leads me to believe the authors didn't really think about it.

Mostly predictable. Maybe not as much when it was written. Enjoyed it, but wouldn't recommend it to others.

This book is not good. Watch the movie, I guess.

What a ride. Imagine the movie but with even more perilous encounters stacked in the way of Logan and Jessica as they race to escape to the fabled Sanctuary. I am glad I read it because I worship at the altar of sci-fi and like to read all the classic novels I can get my hands on, however nothing will replace the image of Michael York that is seared onto my heart. I actually preferred the film as I found the book read like a long action movie with lots and lots of set pieces.

The mythology and explanation of how society came to be this way was intriguing and I loved the first part of the book which described a youth culture indulging in pleasure and excess.

The ending made me do a big. "Come on..really?!" and annoyed me terribly, but regular readers of my review will know that, of course, I will still read the sequel.

Very glad I read it and definitely recommend you pick this up even if only to satiate your curiosity. I noted that another reviewer pointed out that if this had been released in the last twenty years and taking the huge surge of popularity of YA sci fi into consideration, it could have been a huge success. I can see that.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this was not as stupid as the movie (though that's not saying much) and I enjoyed the retro-future vibe, even sans Farrah. It did dip into old man sex fantasy for a little bit and the ending was meh, but there's sequels that might make up for that... 3.5/5
