This book had some fun parts to it but was ultimately misleading and leaves you feeling disappointed. I feel like I wasted my time.
I put this book off for a while, because I really was in no mood for anything pandemic. Then I realized it will be FOUR YEARS in the next couple of months. Any part of this book I didn't love wasn't because of the timing of my reading, but of my higher expectations for Picoult. She used to be one of my absolute favorite authors and this one just didn't do it for me like the others. For that I would give it 3 stars.
***possible SPOILER ALERT***However, my dad was recently hospitalized and experienced horrible hospital delirium. I have never seen my dad scared, but when he called me from a "paint shop" and told me about how he was pushed off in a corner and could hear my voice, but I couldn't come it was nothing less than fear. We had never heard of this and it took a lot of talking to help him understand reality vs HIS reality. For that alone, I moved my ranking of this book from 3 star to 4 star. I wish we all knew more about the experiences people have during trauma, so we can better support them when it happens.

My sister gave me this book to read, I'm sure she knew I would like it more than she did. I purposely avoided the description of this book so I could find out for myself, I'm glad I did! The book is set within the Covid pandemic which made me relive just how scared and stressed the lockdown had made me, but I got a sense of relief that Diana was safe on a beautiful island away from it all. Then the twist came... I was devastated for Diana, I won't go into too much detail, but I will say snapping back to reality can be heartbreaking. Overall, I loved the book. The ending left me frustrated, and I needed to know more.
I want to add a tag..."too soon". This book is about COVID and while a lot of the details included about how life changed and the impact on people who have and who treat the disease will be so worthwhile in a few decades...it felt too soon.
But I liked the twist in the middle of the book and I liked the ending. The characters were slightly underdeveloped, so the relationships and conflicts felt a bit forced.
A solid choice, but probably not one I'll recommend reading for a few years.

a coworker gave this to me and insisted that I read it so I should have known I wouldn’t like it. dumbass plot twist, don’t piss me off
4.25 ughhhh such a good book, i literally read it in a day i was so absorbed. Like honestly i was just vibing with the whole island thing and her exploring her life and taking appreciation for things. It was just the small and pretty things that had be deep in this book, so well written and detailed. And then the TWIST!?!? gurllll I was not ready, i had no idea the book was gonna do something like that to me, since i was set on the island, so i didnt even know what to think at that point. Even back in NY though i was here for it, and seeing this new perspective and context kept me in it till the end fs

So many feels with this book, not sure I have processed it all. I know Jodi Picoult as a popular author, but had only read one of her books before and had in my head she wrote basic family drama love type novels, which are not normally what I reach for. This one I'm not sure why I decided to get, but am glad I did.
First, it includes so many topics that draw my interest: travel- loved reliving spending time in the Galapagos. Covid- may still be a bit raw, but thought she did well to show some important aspects of what we've gone through. And then other nice perks popped up- a Yoko Ono character, art auctions and then of course mother daughter drama and love.
While I didn't love or agree with the main character often, found most other characters not super developed, and am still deciding how much I liked the ending, I read most of it in one sitting and loved how it was written to make you think and feel.

I really enjoyed this story! I love how realistic she writes her stories, I can tell a lot of thought and research went into it. I wasn't expecting such a twist. I wish the ending was more detailed, I felt like I wanted more. This is the first covid story I've read, she explains it well.
