A delightful read - 5*

I first read this book in 2009 - was it really six years ago? This book was part of the topic we had to study in English and I thoroughly enjoyed it then. However, a lot of the class didn't understand the language and this confused me deeply. Perhaps, it was because a majority of the students in the class were 'readers' like myself and so found it difficult. I was used to reading books from the 19th century and so the fact that this was set in the 18th century didn't affect me. (It was written in 1988 - what was so difficult?)

I really did enjoy this book and enjoyed the BBC adaptation in 2009.
Fast-forward to 2015 where I decided to read this book again. It is such a short story and allows me to escape from the pressures of assignments and university. I decided to read this book again so that I could continue to the rest of the series.

I really look forward to reading The Shadow in the North.

Content Warning: death of parent, suicide (mentioned), guns, drugs

I think I was expecting something a little different than what we got in this - not a bad thing, just a different set of expectations. I didn't realize when I picked it up that it was the start to a series, but one that I definitely will not be continuing.

This was really middle of the road for me - nothing too fantastic and nothing too bad, but not enough to spark my interest to continue on with the series.

This is the first of Pullman's Sally Lockhart mysteries. The book is a quick, engaging read. The perfect sort of light amusing fluff for a long train ride, as I happened to be on when I read it. In fact, the only problem with it, as a book for the train, is that it was too quick of a read. I finished it before we were halfway to our destination!

Great YA Victorian mystery with 3-dimensional main characters (and evil villains), plus intriguing plot twists. "Exotic" plot elements (mysterious Indian ruby, Chinese opium dens) could have been offensive but seemed historically appropriate and were sufficiently nuanced to be interesting.

This book was stupid. It was sloppy and had a dumb ending. But murphyreads you sound like a fourth grader talking about a book they were forced to read, well guess what I DON'T CARE for those of you who like Pullman and think that this will be as good as the His Dark Materials series you are wrong and will be sad.

I read this book to decide whether it was appropriate for my 12 year old, but quickly got sucked into it myself. It was exciting, with great, unconventional characters, danger, and mystery. I like that it has a strong, yet vulnerable, female lead. I like that it didn't blossom/devolve into a romantic thing. The villain was quite excellent. I listened to the audio version, which was read with appropriate accents and was so very well done, I think it boosted my rating another star. I couldn't have recreated the different voices so well inside my own head! My daughter loved it too and we are both looking forward to the next Sally Lockhart book - on audio.
