Must watch the Jeff Bridges film again. I have a feeling it was pretty close to the book. Excellent tale. Interesting forward by Donna Tartt. Have to agree with much that she said. Helluva downbeat ending but completely in keeping with how the book is presented. Read it in two sittings. Great entertainment.

Woof, this was not it. Look, I *know* people tell you that you need to look past the racism and sexism in classics because “that was the time” but it is just so not for me. Grateful to now know classic westerns are not my vibe.

I was surprised at myself: I usually like books with female protagonists, and westerns are always fun. I went in to this book with the expectation that I would enjoy it a lot, and I was disappointed at every turn. The writing was colorless and bland, written with so little emotion or insight into the main character's head that at times I wondered if the book should have just been written in the third person, because it seemed like it was anyway. I didn't connect to anyone and I just found myself not caring about any of the characters' struggles. The only reason I stuck with this book to the end is because it was required reading for my english class. I really wanted to like this book, but I came away with a completely let down feeling and no satisfaction whatsoever. 1/10, would not recommend.

This was my first western book. In the past year or so, I've tried to branch out into other genres and have been pleasantly surprised at how much I've enjoyed them. Not sure that is the case with westerns. This book was good, but I don't feel the same as most reviewers who gave it 4 or 5 stars. It does a good job of reeling you in from the very beginning and I was interested in what was going to happen right away and found that I was 1/3 of the way through the book in no time at all. Then, for me, it kind of stalled. I grew tired of all the events that happened in the pursuit of Chaney--they seemed repetitive and there was no excitement in the chase. It wasn't until Mattie happens upon him accidentally that I really even cared to finish the book and that was in the last 20 pages. Those last pages were filled with nail-biting adventure and revealed the true grit that Mattie had as well as the good heart that seemed hidden in Rooster and LaBoeuf. I'm glad I read the book, but didn't like it enough to pursue other westerns just yet.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I will be reading this again soon.
