4.5 ⭐ Masterful storytelling at it's finest. Nisha has a gift for crafting beautifully complex stories. This book is no exception. Rich in culture and lore with characters who are intricate, flawed, and loveable. I couldn't consume the pages fast enough. I can't wait to dive more into this world Nisha created--now the long wait for book 2 begins. Le sigh.

Me ha sorprendido y me ha gustado mucho más de lo que esperaba. A por el siguiente!
I wanted to like this book desperately. It has a wide cast of BIPOC characters and representation and a rich and detailed fantasy world that honestly made me feel how vibrant and beautiful it was. That part was wonderfully written.
I just couldn’t get myself behind the characters. I did not like Zarya and it rubbed me the wrong way at times how angry she was. Even though it’s definitely justified but at times it felt like it was overdone? And then she was absolutely boy crazy. Any male who wasn’t someone she grew up with wanted her, at least in her head. And that was definitely not it for me.
Pair all of that with her having dark hidden magic and a man plaguing her dreams? It was an interesting concept that just fell flat for me character wise. I did continue the series because I had the second book already but I need to feel a connection to the characters and that just wasn’t here for me.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advance copy to read.
Description
A city of magic. A passion born in dreams. A secret that will set their world aflame.
Packed with enemies-to-lovers tension, heart-pounding action and devastating twists, The Nightfire Quartet is an epic fantasy romance that begins with a slow burn and builds in intensity. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Jennifer L. Armentrout and Carissa Broadbent.
This was a truly epic adventure and a great start to the series. I adored the main character Zayra. She was brave, funny, kind and brilliant. After living in a cottage with magic to prevent her leaving she finally manages to escape.
The story is that of found family, forbidden lust and hidden secrets.
If you enjoy Sarah J Maas this will not disappoint.
The world building is depicted in such a brilliant way, with great depth and action. The characters are all perfectly developed, allowing more to come out in future books.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and am now desperate to read the next installment.

While this book is fun to read, I absolutely hate the use of “refusal to communicate” as a central plot device. Many of the issues in the book would have been resolved if two characters had just talked to each other openly, and there was no reason for them to not do this.
I generally liked the inclusion of various nods to Indian culture, but it was a little over the top at some points. There were a couple of neologisms that felt out of place in a fantasy novel, and I also think there were a few too many expletives.
3 stars as a result.

I wanted to really like this and eventually I did finally get into it, but it took about 50% before I got into it. Nisha does not skimp on world building. I'm hoping book two captures my attention better.
