This is one of the books in the series that really pushes things along. A big step is taken and it's one I really enjoyed. There isn't much I can say without ruining something in the book but to me such a vital character arises in this book. One of my favorites actually :) we also get to see a little more of the triumvirate and the consequences and side effects and such.

2 1/2 stars.

This book is all about Anita and her getting more and more powerful. There's not too much of a plot here, the one that is there is a bit thin. Mostly this book is used to tie up loose ends with Anita and her boyfriends (Richard and Jean Claude). Learning how to use her new-found powers. Oh yeah and how she's not only the Lupa of the werewolf pack but also the leader of the wereleopards to. Hmm perfection and power. Everything is just a little too perfect for her, in terms of power and abilities. She's a little less cruel in this book but just as heartless. Things don't always add up in terms of how Anita reacts in situations. A book or so ago she would have shot someone, on the spot, for raping a person she thought to be under her protection (no matter the consequences) and in this book she let's him go until later.

Y'all, this was... not good. I never expected this series to be any kind of great literature, but I appreciate an entertaining trashy novel here and there (I can laugh at it if nothing else). The first few books in the series were pretty fun mysteries, trope-heavy and contrived, but fun.

This novel was not fun for me AT ALL. The supernatural crime drama plots that I'd come to expect were barely present in this one. The dialogue was frustrating and repetitive; the characters were irritating. I'm so sick of reading about characters getting sexually assaulted or violently raped (the number of times the word "rape" comes up in this series so far makes me want to tear my hair out), especially because it's handled pretty poorly imo. I'm also sick of how, out of the few non-white characters introduced, a disproportionate number of those are villains. It's kind of a racist mess.

I wanted to read something light and easy - this was not what I had anticipated.

The seventh book in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, and it’s another scintillating adventure from our fearless heroine.

This instalment ups the danger levels once again, but also finally introduces Asher, who is visiting with the Vampire council. As Jean-Claude’s ex lover from his triumvirate with Julianna, it brings in some great emotional baggage with the dangerous element of the vengeance he is wanting to grind.

I was super excited to see Asher make his appearance, as this brings out more of Jean-Claude’s past, and you also get to see an emotional connection by Jean-Claude with someone other than Anita. It also brings up an interesting element with Anita’s reaction to Asher and how she responds to him throughout the visit, and how that impacts on Asher and his plan for revenge for Julianna’s death and his own maiming.

The deadly Vampire council is in town, and looking for any excuse to remove Jean-Claude from power and to take the dangerous and perplexing Executioner with him. Anita continues to buck the system and thwart the plans of the council.

Tied into the story is an interesting arson case with the police, that keeps the action humming and the danger levels at a peak.

With lots of vampire politics and life or death situations, plenty of angst between Richard, Anita and Jean-Claude with the emotional shifts in the balance of the triumvirate, this chapter in the Anita Blake series is another fast-paced great read that is hard to put down.

This book was awesome. Some people crap on the Anita Blake series because it has to much sex. Really it takes six books before she even has sex with Jean-Claude. And in this one they just hint at it. Burnt Offerings had a lot more about the implications on the vampires becoming people. And that council is really cringe worthy. Really great book

Still enthralled but Mary Sue factor rising. 2018 reread. Another late night as the book held me and would not let me put it down to go to sleep. This one is on par with the others so it is not shark time.
Typos, cut and paste repetitions...these things are normal for series so they don't really bother me. Still fascinated by new characters. I do note some short cuts..big build up to terrifying thing and then instant resolution in the background...a little too easy peasy but in a way it works okay. So far so good, I am still on board.

I think I would like this book more if it wasn't for her love life choice! Although, all this vampire/pack politics stuff is getting a little old. I liked her going out and solving preternatural crimes. Raising the dead, fighting voodoo priestesses. Now she's kind of forsaken that side of the story for all this other stuff and there's so many characters that are so similar it's hard to keep it straight!
