Nazi vampires? Oh, yes. Doesn't it make perfect sense?
Two fully realized World-War II stories in one volume. With vampires. First off, Pearl's husband Henry heads to Taipan to investigate a previously unknown breed of Asian vampires. The next story finds Cash and Book heading to Germany in search of a possible cure for vampirism.
Epic, bloody adventure.

Even though this took me a pretty long time to read, the two stories presented were fantastic! it is very refreshing to read a vampire story that is different from every other vampire story i have read.

The ending of both stories (Pearl/henry/Skinner Sweet & Books/Cash) have bitter sweet endings. Vol 4 will be interesting to see where both parties end up.

Two story arcs in the prize of one!

The pairing of Scott Snyder with Rafael Albuquerque and Sean Murphy probably one of my favorite creative teams in current comicbooks. The simple and the feeling of "what comes next?" in Snyder's storytelling makes this book one of the best in current Vertigo lineup. I really like how the uniqueness he puts in the story. The only problem I had was the setting of Taipan and the Tagalog speaking child, I don't think Taipan is in the Philippines, unless I was mistaken.

I really like Rafael's artwork in this series, he is a great artist to be paired up with Snyder. His rendition of how the vampires full on transformation is really good, I hope he stays in the series in the end.

I was glad Sean Murphy was the artist for the Survival of the Fittest storyline. He got this eye in detail when it comes to expressions and actions. If they have to replace Rafael I'd prefer Sean over any artists.

With the usual velvety covers (I like touching them, adds to the exp), great storytelling and really good sequential art. I highly recommend.

War is in the air. The enemy is not who you think they are. Your friends are not who you think they are. Pearl is back. Vampire Sweet is back. We learn more backstory on Felicia Book and Cashal. Together they team up for the most epic Vampire adventure ever.

This volume has three stories in it: Strange Frontier, Ghost War and Survival of the Fittest.

Strange Frontier is a shorty, in which we see Skinner Sweet seeing a Wild, West West show and sort of taking some people to task for betraying that lost world. I really liked this little vignette.

Both of the other two stories are set in the 40s, during WWII, and both introduce us to new type of vampires.

The first follows Skinner, Pearl and Henry going to a small island, Taipan, near Japan, with a nest of feral vampires. I liked the first story a lot, and easily give it 4 stars. I think it's been a pretty regular thing, for this series, that I just prefer the stories with Skinner in it than those without. He's an awesome character, and the interplay between him and Pearl, especially, is interesting to watch, as Pearl is torn between her two worlds.

The second story follows Cash and Felicia Book in Romania, infiltrating a Nazi research base to look for a vampire cure. While Nazi Vampires are pretty cool, I think I'm sort of just burned out in Nazis in general. Also, the most interesting part of this story was the ancient, progenitor type vampires they discovered because the Carpathian ones are a little familiar at this point. (And the progenitor ones are awesome.)

I've never developed the same attachment to Book as I have to Skinner and Pearl, and this story seemed a little more average, overall. I give this one 3 stars.

Both stories, however, leave interesting openings for future installments, and I remain curious to see how things develop. I look forward to the next in the series.

Anytime there is a Pearl-based story, I want to read it! This one involves Pearl's husband and she going off to hunt a new kind of vampire and then tells about a couple of vampire hunters.

A solid volume in the series. Snyder is a great horror writer, and I'm enjoying what he has to say about the vampire sub-genre. His main anti-hero, Skinner Sweet, is just the right combination of viciously evil and charmingly charismatic. The mini-history lessons as the series progresses from the wild west to present day are also interesting to follow, even as they're twisted around to accommodate Snyder's supernatural addition. If you're a fan of Snyder's you should definitely be reading this series.
