Moral of the story: don't follow cute guys you've just met to new countries, especially if you don't have any money.
Not a fan of the plot of this one overall. It was too overly intricate. I'm also realizing that I'm generally not a fan of Christie's works when it delves into espionage and politics.
I did, however, like that Christie's knowledge of the Middle Eastern culture showed here and that there were also a few lines scattered throughout that poked fun at the ignorance of British tourists at the time.

This isn’t really a mystery. It’s more like an adventure novel of international intrigue. Very dated, of course. But it was mildly entertaining and very short. Don’t look here for classic Christie though.
They Came to Baghdad is a spy/action thriller and not the typical Christie mystery. The book starts out slowly, introducing several different characters without an obvious connection between them. However, when the character of Victoria Jones enters the scene, things start to get interesting. After being fired from her job, Victoria falls for a man she meets in a London park. Without even knowing his last name, Victoria decides to travel to Baghdad to find him. She ends up in the middle of an exciting, but dangerous adventure.
After Victoria experiences a few different adventures and close calls, the story has a dramatic and unexpected ending. This is a reread for me and the book is much better than I remember it. Even though I prefer Christie's more traditional mysteries, I'm glad I read this book again.

This was like a 2.75 for me. I clearly do not like Christie’s adventure books. I prefer her classic whodunnits. The only thing that made it better was that I actually enjoyed Victoria as a character.
