DID NOT FINISH: 15%

The characters felt flat and one dimensional. The main character whom you kind of get to know is not only unlikeable but her stories are told in an unattached/unemotional manner that makes her fall flats. Even stories that can make the main character sympathetic such as her valuing how people treat someone who variously undergone some hard times, is written in a harsh manner so that I will did not like the main character or care about what happens or has happened to her.

This book tries to be many things and falls flat in doing so.

This book *is not* for everyone. It is not an easy read. You will hate Ani and have no idea why you are still reading this book with weird flashbacks, and then something will be revealed and you'll get a bit of an idea of a story. And then, at least for me, I read the whole last half of the book in one sitting because I couldn't believe where it was going. Since it clearly gripped me at the end, and I did love the ending itself, I am giving it 4 stars.

I started the book hating every single character, but by the time it finished, the journey that the author took us on with the narrator, was a complicated, messy, tragic, but inspiring tale. Very hard to read, but very worth it. I particularly think teenaged boys should read this book in order to put themselves in the shoes of an supremely insecure 14 year old girl who desperately wants the approval of her most popular peers and what she endured just to sit at their table.

Saw this on the Today show of all things, and then some article on THR about Reese Witherspoon's production company already buying the rights to it for a movie. It seems like anything remotely suspenseful or disturbing at this point is compared to Gillian Flynn, and this is no exception. I read it in a few hours -- the antagonist TifAni is a lot like most Flynn characters. Pretty much unlikable, pretty much impossible to stop reading about. It was as compelling as it was disturbing. I don't regret reading it but I was so glad when it was over. Still wasn't half as bad as Dark Places was ...AHHHHH
