very good. So complex and intricate, this one kept me up into the wee hours reading :P
I struggled with this book.. I am a dedicated Jodi Picoult fan.. She has the most amazing ability to transform words on a page to an entire world that you fall into with characters you come to love understand and empathize with. However, I do not believe in ghosts and I found the story line a huge struggle. Especially when it goes back to Lia in the 1930's. Overall I found I only read the book for the characters and not for the overload of facts and quotes in it.
An okay read, but I wouldn't recommend it if I were trying to enthuse people to read Picoult

a good story about the supernatural, about life, and death, and things in between.
I have decided to no longer use star ratings. They are too arbitrary to me. Instead, I will be ranking an author's books against their other books. This does not mean that I do NOT like their books, just in what order I enjoy them most.

I liked The Tenth Circle and My Sister's Keeper so much, I decided to keep reading Jodi Piccoult. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Not nearly as heavy going as the other two I mentioned. This was a mystery, a ghost story, a love story, a study of human relationships, a commentary on eugenics, all rolled in to one book. Like her other books, she follows the perspective of many different characters. I found it not only very readable, but I could not wait to read each night so I could find out what would happen to all the characters. My only criticism is I got a little tired of Ross's suicidal tendencies and clinging to his past love, but it was essential to the story line, so showing him as a cheerful, emotionally healthy individual would not have exactly worked!
Okay, "Second Glance" by Jodi Picoult--- I've discovered she's kind of became my guilty pleasure author this year. I've read several of her books now and so far "The Storyteller" and "My Sister's Keeper" have been my favorites
This one caught my eye when shopping on thrift books because I love to go ghost hunting so I was really curious how I would feel. And truly-- I feel very conflicted.
This isn't by far my favorite Picoult book. I thought some of the character dynamics were odd, and I guessed a few things in the story.... but I still really enjoyed reading it and wanted to see how it ended. Is this one that I'm going to go out of my way to recommend to others? Probably not. But I still felt like I got a good story.
(Also shout out because she acknowledged Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of the TAPS team! I was like "I KNOW THEM!")

The beginning is clunky, as many characters are introduced and the story is told from multiple perspectives. All of the individual stories and clues eventually get connected, so be patient.
Ross Wakeman, who has tried to kill himself in order to be reunited with the woman he loved, is a paranormal investigator.
Spencer Pike is dying man who sells his land to a developer. Members of the Abenaki tribe protest the development of their sacred burial ground. After several spooky incidents, the developer hires Ross to find out if supernatural forces are at work.
Picoult has added a little something for everyone in this amazing novel--am exciting murder mystery, historical fiction centered on the eugenics project in Vermont that inspired the Nazis, all mixed up with supernatural spookiness and love.

This novel is very different in comparison to anything else I have ever read by Jodi Picoult, but this doesn't make it any less excellent. It is set in two time periods, and as I adore anything historical this made me love 'Second Glance' even more. I found that I preferred the sections in the past more than the sections in the present, but that isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the present story as I found very intriguing. This isn't a courtroom drama, unlike the majority of Jodi Picoult's novels, which I think is why some of her fans haven't liked this book as much. I quite liked taking a break from all of the drama of the legal system! 'Second Glance' also had a supernatural element to it, which I think Jodi has dipped into occasionally in books such as 'Mercy,' 'Vanishing Acts' and possibly 'Salem Falls' but not at such a high level. I don't usually like to read about supernatural stuff as I find it quite bogus, but it fitted in well with the storyline and didn't make the novel any less enjoyable. Definitely a 10/10, and one I plan to read again sometime in 2009.
This book started off a little slow for me, but by the end I was invested in the characters and there are a few very unpredictable twists at the end. Certainly worth a read especially if you are a Picoult fan.
This is only the third Jodi Picoult book I've read. I read Nineteen Minutes and My Sister's Keeper when I was about 15. And I thought they were two of the greatest books ever. I realize that I've matured a lot in six years, so I doubt that I'd give Nineteen Minutes and My Sister's Keeper five star ratings if I read them again. But I still think that they're superior to Second Glance. This book was a bit disappointing. I expected to like it a lot more because my roommate said this was her favorite of Jodi Picoult. But, you know... she probably read it when she was like 15.
I enjoyed the first two-thirds of Second Glance a lot. Picoult's not a fantastic writer, but not every reading experience needs to be Infinite Jest. I was just looking for something fun. Too bad the last one-third was dull as a Carmelite convent. And you know how Jodi Picoult is known for her twist endings? Don't look for one of those here. The ending of this book is DUMB. Predictable and DUUUMB.
Oh, and if your name is Aimee, know that the woman named Aimee in this book is dead. Permanently. She's barely a character. Here's hoping The Spectacular Now gives me a more animated Aimee.
