First, I really enjoy the beginning of the book. The characters were introduced pretty well and you got a sense of what drove the characters. I always felt like Max had some skeletons in his closet that he needed to air out but I was really waiting for the story to unfold which it did. The descriptiveness of all the scary elements of the book was written very well and I enjoyed it. I loved how tense the atmosphere was and I felt like I was living the nightmare that Kyle was living in throughout the story. However, a large amount of this book was filled with overexplanation and exposition and backstory on the cult. I do appreciate learning the history of the cult and how it impacted the characters. However, I think the bulk of this story was over explained and all of the tension that was built up from the scary elements of the book were put on pause and took me out of the world building aspect. The end felt a bit rushed to me which is weird to say since this book is over 500 pages and it kind of gave me survival zombie video game tease. Overall, I think it was an okay read. Would I read it again? Probably not but it wasn't terrible. Just not my jam!

I had goosebumps!! It’s been ages since a horror novel really got under my skin like Last Days did. The writing evokes a dark and eerie atmosphere, pulling you in with a slow, careful build-up that makes the tension nearly unbearable. The characters are believable, and their reactions to the frightening events feel authentic, making it easy to empathize with their growing terror. The author doesn’t rely on jump-scares or shock value; instead, he weaves psychological horror with supernatural elements, creating a sense of creeping fear that sinks in deep!
Horror done right—disturbing, immersive, and impossible to forget.

Not Nevill’s best, unfortunately. I loved the concept of a documentarian getting sucked into a cult, but it got far too other-worldly. If it had stuck in this century and not stretched centuries plural, or connected better with past centuries, it would have been a better book. I wouldn’t recommend it over The Ritual.

This book mirrors the type of horror films that catch my attention: it build the tension very gradually, not rushing anywhere without fleshing out the characters at play first.
As events start to spiral out of control, it becomes increasingly tense; the scare sequences are expertly written with such a sense of atmosphere that they are actively terrifying.
It's only slightly let down by iffy dialogue in parts and a couple of heavy handed interactions later on in the book that feel our of place and break up the fine wire tension that has been built upon til that point.
Definitely worth a read!

I mostly was enjoying this, but it’s just gotten very chatty and why doesn’t Kyle believe what Max is saying after everything he’s seen? What does he have to lose?
Well, that was really a shame. This one was 80% exposition based on something that didn't actually happen in the 70s, something barely interesting, with characters that gave you no reason to care about their fates. If this had been told from the perspective of someone like Martha or Bridgette, right from the point at which it all started, it would have been a whole lot more enjoyable. But it wasn't. So it wasn't. Sorry, Mr. Nevill... I'm still gonna read the Small Shadows one, though.
Wow, did I really dislike this book. If anyone wants to be put in a reading slump this is the book for you.
It desperately needed an editor to cut down on the 250 unnecessary pages. Seriously, why was this over 500 pages long?
At the end, it just continued to snowball into worse and worse plot ideas. The characters were fine but unlikable.
