So many wtf moments. Why do I keep devouring her books? 😂 I think I just really like the heroines?

As someone who loves angst, this was good and angsty. I do think it took a bit too long for Vere to get over himself and admit his feelings, but it didn't feel too rushed by the time it happened. I do wish that there had been an epilogue or something so we could see how all of the characters from the series ended up. Overall, an enjoyable read. Their wedding night literally had me crying at my desk at work (and trying to make sure no one could see that I was crying LOL)

Is this really the same author that wrote The Luckiest Lady in London? I found this so boring, the characters lacked any interesting personality and had no chemistry with each other. This was such a slog to get through. I do still love her prose/writing style so hopefully her other books work better for me. (But TLLIL was amazing and absolutely the best of this trilogy).

... I want to like this more than I did. Sherry Thomas is such a great writer, and her plots continue to draw me in and keep me riveted, but I felt like this wrapped up a bit too easily, which was frustrating after an entire book of obfuscation and misdirection on the part of both the hero and heroine.

It doesn't really feel like the hero and heroine really connected.

Elissande is a virtual prisoner of her uncle. Lord Vere is a secret agent and has maintained a cover as an idiotic, simpleton bachelor. Elissande is desperate enough that she tricks Vere into marriage to save her and her aunt. Can Vere maintain his cover and protect his new wife and family?

Not your typical HR, at least not ones I’ve read. This is my second Sherry Thomas HR novel and I find she writes complex characters and premises. The romance is there but it’s hovering in the background weaved intricately into the seams of the plot. But as with any HR, it will always end in some HEA.

There were plenty of hilarious moments as Vere played the village idiot. The beginning of the book was light and filled with humor but things start to get serious as both main characters became married and the reality of that marriage started to sink in.

I like this Thomas book more than other readers seem to. As usual, Thomas' prose and dialogue are exquisite and the longing from both characters is wonderfully, heart-yearningly angsty. Is the mystery sort of melodramatic? Sure, but this is HR and Thomas does a great job balancing the drama and mystery with the developing romance. I think side romances are tricky but the one with Vere's brother is better than in most books and it actually contributes the the main mystery plot of the book so it was less annoying than it could have been.

Overall: extremely satisfying, a reread, re-listen HR.
