TL;DR: sleep is important. Giving 4 stars though bc I felt the author made quite a few claims that weren’t really backed up by strong causal evidence. Like saying that people who get more sleep tend to have higher paying jobs. This claim implies something that isn’t really true, in my opinion. More likely it is that higher paying jobs allow more schedule flexibility and thus more sleep. There were a few other little claims like that that just seemed off to me.
But overall very informative! I certainly learned a lot.

I enjoyed this! I started reading it because a speaker at a talk I attended at work recommended it (he was talking about how to avoid burnout and stay healthy in the workplace lol) - I took a long time to finish it, as I'd read it in short pieces to try and absorb as much as possible. It was hard to read at points (learning that society is set up for morning people and is literally shortening night owls' lifespans was truly unfortunate to read - and the general fact that you can never catch up on sleep and that a lack of sleep will have devestating effects on your body and mind was rough), but it was fascinating and ultimately has made me take sleep more seriously. I'd recommend this to people!
A must read for everyone if you have subpar sleep habits. Very informative and well written
A must read!!! I have been struggling with sleeping regularly during the pandemic, and have been a bit of an insomniac my entire life. This book helped me understand all of the ways that affects me. Sleep truly is the best medicine. If you regularly don’t get enough, we now know that you are greatly increasing your likelihood of cancer, diabetes and mental illness. I also learned some tips for how to work on a regular sleep routine.

Fascinating and terrifying in equal measure. We all "know" how important sleep is, and yet we consistently and often intentionally deprive ourselves of it. This book very clearly shows that the result of such deprivation is not just tiredness, but a breakdown of nearly every biological, psychological, and emotional system we possess, and how that breakdown negatively affects society as a whole. A deep dive into a subject we all think we understand, but that, really, is nearly incomprehensible in its scope and impact on our lives. Highly, highly recommend.
Excellent survey of sleep research with data-driven calls to action to push high school start times later, stop 30-hour rotations by physicians, and end the sanctioning of sleep deprivation for torture. This book changed the way I perceive and respect others’ desires to sleep in (I’m an early bird), and includes shocking statistics on the impact of even mild sleep deprivation on driving, immune response, and decision-making.
