It's 9:43 and I really need to start getting ready for bed soon. And make sure the bedroom is cool, dark, soundless, no alcohol or caffeine in my system, otherwise . . . I'm doomed to suffer obesity, Alzheimer's disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

Bála jsem se, že bude kniha moc repetetivní a opakvat jen stará zřejmá fakta, ale příjemně překvapila a v pár ohledech mi i otevřela oči. Doporučuji hlavně lidem, kterým "fakt šest hodin spánku stačí" a ještě víc těm, kteří si myslí, že je spánek přeceňovaný.
Speciálně by si ji měl přečíst náš pan premiér, než se bude příště chlubit 16hodinovou pracovní dobou.

"Why We Sleep" er uten tvil den mest interessante og hardtslående populærvitenskapelige boken jeg noen gang har lest. Walker vandrer gjennom drømmeland med en rekke sidesprang der han undersøker ulike aspekter av søvn, alltid med bakgrunn i forskning. Eksempelvis omhandler den hva som faktisk skjer (og hvor farlig det er) når man dupper litt bak rattet, og den skremmende effekten av moderat drikking på læring. (som kan være ganske kjipt å lese som student)
Til forskjell fra andre tematikker som kan sies å gå under paraplyen livsstilslitteratur, som kosthold og trening, vil jeg påstå at både jeg og folk flest vet skremmende lite om konsevensene av mangelfull søvn. Det er lite lystbetont eller gøy over det som presenteres, og nettopp derfor mener jeg dette kan være en viktig bok å lese for mange.

An insightful read into sleep and the human brain.
The basics of life are: food, water, air, and sleep. It's eye opening how sleep affects physical, mental, emotional health. Physical: bad sleep is a cause of life mortality (not just one aspect of mortality but life mortality in general), correlated with dementia and Alzheimer's, diabetes, etc., you can die from not sleeping. Mental: causes cognitive impairment similar to alcohol, correlated with mental illnesses such as bipolar, anxiety and depression, schizophrenia etc., memory formation and learning... And sleep helps to regulate emotions and take the sting out of painful and traumatic memories, with interesting and profound implications for PTSD.
I've definitely started sleeping more lol. And I know now that if I am injured or feel horrible, I need to get good sleep.
If you want to live well and live long, make it a priority and a practice to have consistent good sleep.
